In one sentence what’s the best way to explain Nostr to non tech people? I’m wearing my Nostrasia shirt. The second I mention protocol eyes glaze over.
Discussion
Say its the only social media app without ads
I hate pigeonholing Nostr to just social media applications.
Thats all the normies will understand.
Going deeper gets really technical really fast. Maybe just say it's starting out like Twitter by it people are building really cool stuff on it.
Or say it's like Twitter but everyone can build any app for it they want.
Technically accurate description rarely convert non-techies. Let’s start where they are. If they only know social media app, then nostr can be that for them. Once they join, they can learn other nostr capabilities. One step at a time.
This is the social media platform that you can never be banned from. 🎤 drop
Tell them it's the new cool people's club but only the initiated may find out it's secrets. Sod explaining it till they're at least on the hook 🪝
“It’s like hanging with your best friends and family from all over the world. Sure, some of them are annoying and say crazy stuff but that’s just the way they are.”
Then send them to whynostr.com
🙂
Tell people it’s not for them.. then they’ll definitely be interested. 😜
Social network not owned by billionaires or anybody.
You can access your following/followers through many different apps, websites and services.
If you want to be paid for your content, you can instantly.
No algorithms
If you mention protocol, I like how nostr:npub1sn0wdenkukak0d9dfczzeacvhkrgz92ak56egt7vdgzn8pv2wfqqhrjdv9 describes it.
Social media that doesn’t boost hate, fear, and sensationalism
disregard. Just saw your reply. Forgot about the endless app potential outside of social media 😅 nostr:note1r3parnfjtds7gslxwfzazr86jpd2z8csngkxsfuy4g7kvughhycs0jly8k
Quote the man
Yeah Satoshi didn’t say that immediately. I won’t argue with someone but I will do what I can to inform the curious, hopefully in a way that intrigues them.
Id just try to show them all the different clients just to show how diverse the protocol is.
Because it’s more then what we even think it could be.
So it’s hard to describe what it really is.
It’s kinda like trying to explain magic to someone who’s not a magician.
It’s easier to show how the magic works.
A platform where users can post and interact with each other without a central authority or corporation overseeing it, using blockchain technology to ensure censorship resistance and user control over data.
#nostr
Nostr is a new way of doing the internet that is inherently social
Like phone apps were a different way than web pages, and web pages were a different way than AOL.
I think screaming PROTOCOL at everybody is a horrible way to gain adoption.
Way back when (i'm old 🤷) us tech savvy folks were trying to get people out of AOL were weren't screaming about how cool a protocol http was. It was just The Web and you could find cool stuff with it.
so maybe
Nostr is the social internet.
or
It's not a social app, it's the social internet.
Protocol sounds cool to nerds, normies don't even know what http means or what it does.
It's about having the best content. Nothing else matters.
Totally agree! Otherwise you are stuck explaining the differences between a protocol and a platform and why protocols are better.
Finding that content painlessly is important as well.
Lmfao no
"Best content" is way too subjective. How about the best way to create content? Or the best way to find content?
Idk I feel weird designating my thoughts and communications (or any one else’s) as “content”
bad take for teaching Ai too
Oh I had assumed your issue with their post was the "best" part not the "content" part.
I can see how "content" has negative connotations these days with "influencers" and other social media garbage.
I dunno, I think the “protocol” vs “social internet” distinction is still a bit over people’s heads if all they really know about the internet is Facebook and Instagram.
Maybe the best way to describe it is as a new social network (already technically incorrect) that people are excited about because it works differently from any other social network in a way that puts more control over what you see in your own hands, and lets any application developer make new apps that can show different kinds of content on the network in cool new ways.
Either that or #penisbutter
Remember dial up?
Look how far the internet has come!
Well, social media, is now changing for the better too.
We've been using Facebook for instance, for about 12yrs now....
Time for an upgrade!
#Nostr is a uncentered, personality moderated community forum that used #Bitcoin as the exchange of appreciation & value 😉
#Nostr
#Bitcoin
Its like social media but your ex is not on it
It’s like Twitter but you can choose between any different apps the access it, all using the same password (private key) and handle (public key).
I like to say it's like if Twitter and Bitcoin had a baby. And it takes more after Bitcoin.
Ok, I've been trying to better organize my thoughts on how to say this better. What the better elevator pitch to explain what nostr is. Yes, it'a protocol, but what exactly does that mean. How do you explain how a protocol is different from a platform when that sentence inevitably comes up?
A platform holds things. It constrains them. Things are *kept* on a platform.
A protocol connects things. It brings together. Things are *shared* with a protocol.
So. How do you say it's a protocol without saying it's a protocol?
What is nostr? Nostr connects things.
Nostr connects Amythist to Zap.Stream and it connects ZBD to habla.news and it connects Damus to Stemstr and on and on and on because it's designed to be shared and it's designed to be unstopable.
And even more importantly nostr connects your profile to all of those thing so your friends and followers will be able to connect with you in all those places*
So that's my elevator pitch. No protocols, no bitcoins, amd no purple pills. They'll get all that once we get them in the door. They'll blink and the next thing they know they'll have a full node running on a raspberry pi next to the wifi router.
*They may occasionally need to refollow you until we get this stupid disappearing follow list problem solved, but still.
It's like Twitter but with less than 100 users
It’s like immigrating to a free country from Soviet Russia. You might have to leave some of your wealth behind, but better to set yourself up in the land of the free, rather than toil at the mercy of a capricious authority.
You might have to leave some of your wealth behind in Soviet Russia? Huh?
when you’re trying to escape a country, which you can’t leave from, you can only bring so much with you
How about when you’re trying to escape your own mind?
you can’t escape your own mind really.
you can calm it down and incrementally reprogram it, is how i see and adjust it.
nudge the way your mind processes things with changing the people that surround you, your microhabits and how you react to information
I’m just left scratching my head because Soviet era Russia was communist. When I talked to people who emigrated during that time they were not leaving wealth behind. It all belonged to the state.
The senior party apparatchiks were wealthy, but feel free to substitute your non-communist tyranny of choice!
A protocol with a world of possibilities where there is no Algo, no ads,no narcissism ,no billionaire playground and above all no social credit system.
