Pay your relays, people.

Or you will become the product just like on Twitter.

Relays can get sponsorships to display certain content faster while fully blocking other content from ever appearing in your timeline.

By manipulating how and when reactions, zaps, reports, replies, and everything else are sent to the client, they can shape your perception of a topic.

Using multiple relays help, but it doesn't solve the issue. With more money coming in, more problems will show up. Clients can help as well, but it won't solve it.

They can, quite literally, shape your views of any product without changing anyone's posts.

Running an own relay does not solve toe problem. You also need to convince other people to also use it.

true

set up a LNURL so that people can zap you ⚡️

I think I just figured out how to set it up. Would you send me a couple says for testing?

all good ⚡️

Thanks very much! I will return it back as soon I get into my desktoo web browser. The wallet is not accessible here in Amethyst.

which wallet are you using?

Using Alby browser extension.

use a mobile wallet as well such as Wallet of Satoshi or Phoenix

much easier to zap from Amethyst

Would love a list of relays that accept payment. Is this model up and running yet?

Filter by “paid” in the aggregates menu.

Same goes for clients. Shadow banning is only the first step…

Are you sure relays are like that? Which ones?

I just see them as altruistic operations.

Lightning splits with relays!

Is there an optimal number of relays?is it ideal that everyone hosted their own infrastructure?

use more smaller relays than few big ones

decentralization solves this, to an extent. relay operators will play a massive role in nostr adoption

I'm using one payed relay. I don't see any difference. Maybe I'm doing this wrong, but I there is no clear incentive for me yet.

I see paid relays as a stop-gap measure to try to prevent spam. I run nostr:npub16fcy8ynknssdv7s487nh4p2h4vr3aun64lpfea45d7h4sts9jheqevshgh as a non-profit to ensure there is no need for sponsorships. Have applied for grants and get some donations to cover costs. The big issue with relays is I see many are literally just one server (single point of failure). As well as being siloed, so if a big relay goes offline a huge chunk of nostr will as well. Promoting streaming between relays and clear ToS/Privacy Policies and how data is managed is key to #grownostr . I have posted a lot on this but few relay operators engage in the discussion.

It's not about spam. It's about incentives. They will have to find money somewhere to pay for servers.

Seems like paid encrypted DM image hosting could subsidize the free services relays provide?

Could relays be free and paid at the same time? Accept notes of a certain size freely but come back asking for payment of LN invoice to accept notes containing more data than their set threshold?

It's possible, but data storage is the cheapest part of hosting a relay. The actual instance (compute) is usually the most expensive part. If right size everything and leverage Docker containers can keep costs down for a very robust network like we have. Of course the more data the more processing so have to take into account.

I see monthly paid relays as possible but most with one time is not sustainable. Some popular paid relays are black boxes which is hard to know what paying for.

As someone new to Nostr, how would one go about paying a relay?

Thank you!

Have a look at nostr.wine. I’ve used their relay and filter for 6 months now

https://docs.nostr.wine/filter/readme

Is it sustainable to only accept Bitcoin? Not every Nostr-user wants to handle that.

Anyone can integrate any other coin into their apps. Nostr is not dependent on Bitcoin in any way.

I was thinking in regards to what currencies relays accept. Do you know of any that accept other coins?

food for thought

Makes sense. Not really sure how this would work. I just got lightning setup to send/receive zaps.

Perhaps something in the wallet.

I tried to pay and it requires bitcoins, which is not anonymous. How can I pay with an anonymous transaction, like with monero? I'm from a country under a #dictatorship (#brazil#) and don't want to run any risk.

Thanks!

Each relay can offer their own payment structures. You have to reach out to the ones you decide to use.

Thanks! If I pay for one really, I guess I will still get spam from others. Would the solution be to only use relays for which I paid? I this case, as I understood that one relay is not enough, should I pay for multiple relays?

Thank you!

Perhaps we need to have a system where relays can charge by skimming off the top of zaps rather than an outright fee.
