The answer is that there are varying levels of complexity involved in the cryptography. The math that youβre trusting in Bitcoin is basically addition. Monero math that youβre trusting is much harder.

Downside is being chased by governments. At this point they've pretty much tried to criminalize owning monero since they can't monitor how money you have there.
There is no downside to using Monero (except the authorities interest in you).
I don't give a shit about the 'authorities'. Not anymore. Not since they've proven their all either liars or slavers, or both. Have has spent a few tens of billions trying to murder me covertly.
Civil disobedience is what built bitcoin, and it's why Monero is what it is (the best privacy coin; only used by those NOT so enslaved their 'daren't use it because the authorities might be/will be more interested in me if I do #slavementality ).
It would be nice if we didnβt need to think about Monero, but itβs a separate blockchain that can do very important things that Bitcoin cannot do. Not shitcoinery, but actual use cases. This is why both Michael Saylor and Peter Todd have said "if you need privacy, use Monero".
I donβt want it to be this way, but the culture is shifting and privacy is no longer desirable for these fiat corporations and the governments they trust in. That is why they continue to push their sunken cost into lightning. Devs are still trying to figure out how to scale Lightning. How many more decades until they attempt non-custodial privacy?
Bitcoin is a much better store of value than Monero. There is no second best in that department. But I came to Bitcoin because it is supposed to be the best money, and money has many more properties than "store of value".
