How would define “wokism” ? Does this term have a negative or a positive connotation for you ?
Discussion
The term seems to be inherently pejorative.
I whould define wokeism as the act of shouting at non isseus because it is a great way to get attention negative and positive , without actually trying to do something against actual injustices against humans or groups.
Guess you could call that a neggative connotation
Negative
Wokism = illness
It’s mostly something a swath of idealistic white Americans have co-opted from black Americans and watered down its meaning to bland nothingness.
Okay that’s what I read also, first it was positive to describe someone who’s aware of societal problems etc…now it’s been used to say anything and everything, so it did lose its meaning ! And it’s starting to have a negative connotation
The negative connotations come from the prominently right leaning individuas, used as a derogatory term like commie or hippie.
The idea that one must waken up to the actual problems rampant in our society pushes directly again the norms held for the last~60 years by those who have enjoyed a level of comfort on the back of minorities.
The major issues running rampant are due in part to continual changing demographics, and a loss “of how it used to be”
Okay, so from the comments, it has a negative connotation. Thank you for helping a non-American friend understand better 💜🫂
People forgetting that you shouldn’t cry wolf when there is no wolf.
The “for you” in your question seems to invite personal anecdotes, so I’ll add one.
I don’t believe that anyone who holds a politically progressive viewpoint would adopt this term to describe their own perspective. This seems to be an adaptation of the term “woke” (which has a richer etymology) in order to flatten and perhaps pathologize it when forming criticism of left-leaning groups or individuals.
Understood, whenever there is politics involved, right vs left etc..something definitely goes wrong. Thank you for taking the time to answer 💜🫂💜
In general, I agree this is true. The ability to hear perspectives we don’t agree with requires awareness, a certain level of emotional control, and a willingness to seek common ground. I’m interested in exploring this more on nostr specifically, but I fear the expansion of our community into multiple deeply held perspectives being destructive in ways that other social media platforms have reinforced/seen previously. Feels early yet.
Cultural Marxism. Negative and counter to personal liberty.
It was a term used on the left for about 5 minutes circa 2016, then appropriated by the Angertainment industry ever since as a blanket condemnation of the unstoppable demographic changes that threaten the insecurities of desperate white Christian Nationalists who are in decline.
“Woke” is simply trying to see the world through other people’s eyes. It’s totally positive.
