Are there any downsides to:

- telling the truth

- refusing to knowingly tell or agree to a lie

Nope.

Arguably there are social downsides in the short term. Case in point being COVID. If you refuse to take the vaccine, there were social downsides.

Other than that, I can't really see any downsides. Definitely sleep better at night.

But even the social downside bit is subjective, I guess, depending on your views.

Yeah, the social consequences when the group is participating in a lie can be excommunication.

And in some cases, excommunication is death. And that can be ok if people who also want to defect see it and choose the same eventually to turn the herd. You'd have to make that choice wisely.

Yes, some people react aggressively to hearing the truth.

Very true. I think you'd have to choose your battles and sometimes just walk away.

Adhering to these principles will alienate you from most people over time. So be it.

Agreed 🫡

I think people can actually live with deep points of contention with their peers and get along fine, but a lot of people are afraid to leave things in a disagreement.

Lying all the time is hard work.

For real, it takes a toll.

Even if you think you're telling the truth, the negative effects of believing lies bleeds into every decision you make, and your life strays from reality, causing a lot of pain.

Its your patriotic duty to lie on your taxes. Withholding funds from the government ensures they stay with rational market participants and at least have the possibility of being used in a productive manner.

That's a good point. I didn't think about that angle. Lying to defend your property from people who want to steal it seems like a good thing to do. At that point, all that matters in the end is if you can prevent the theft.

What about undoing all the theft that already happened?

Lying to a thief to prevent violence is fine, but it will never be enough to slay the tax dragon

It's your patriotic duty to not file taxes at all

Lying is only a cop out for people who've already fallen for the trap of filing

I have kids, man, and other stuff the government can steal.

Lying is a solid Plan B (if your OPSEC is any good).

I'd say duty to kids can supercede patriotic duty, so yes, a solid plan B in that case

You can lose social capital by being truthful and refusing to be a part of a lie. Like, following a leader’s orders by lying to your subordinates even if you know what you’re telling is untrue or a lie. You gain social capital with your leadership. By refusing you might lose it or lose your position for someone who won’t refuse.

Just tell people where you heard it from. "My leader told me to tell you this..."

yes, but also no

Zoom out and you'll find a big no

When a scammer DMs me asking for my seed words, I find it's best to lie to them.

Personally I find it best to ignore them.

If the truth hurts
