Anybody got a good ethical domain name registrar? I’ve been using Gandi.net since it was founded 25 years ago, but it got acquired by your.online in 2023. For a while nothing much changed except for they tried to upsell me to some stuff i didn’t want.

But now i’m noticing that they’re getting noticeably less reliable. Updating name and nameserver records isn’t reliable, paying for things fails more often, their web interface has bugs. Basically they’re letting gandi die as they try and upsell people to their crap Total Webhosting Solutions stuff.

So, what ethical registrars are there?

i personally use cloudflare, but since it's big, it's likely to not be "ethical" 😅

yeah CF can be complicated but honestly i much prefer using CF for stuff than Google Cloud / AWS / Azure / Digital Ocean.

I’ve used 1984.is for hosting in the past, i forgot they also run a registar. They’re probably the most ethical.

Also njala, namecheap is an option too, both accept btc

what's the issue with digital ocean?

I've started using Porkbun — so far so good.

Squarespace seems fine, all they want is you to use them for the site otherwise domains are reasonable and no upsells

Greenhost.net is still an option and 1984.hosting

Curious to know your definition of ethical here. I've been using Name.com and I haven't had issues with them at all, but I have no idea how ethical they are. (Certainly better than GoDaddy at least).

absolutely not ethical

Name.com? Elaborate?

I can not reply to your question, not sure why. Name.com is next to GoDaddy one of the biggest registrars in the world and well there is just nothing ethical about their brand and or information on the website. We lost access to one domain registered at name.com and this was never restored.

Hi rabble 😉🤟🏴‍☠️ nice to meet you 🤝

Sadly, ‘ethical’ and ‘domain registrar’ rarely go hand in hand these days. Most get acquired, upsell relentlessly, or compromise on privacy. If you value transparency and reliability, consider Njalla (if you’re okay with proxy ownership) or OrangeWebsite for privacy-focused domains. For more mainstream options with decent ethics, Porkbun and Epik (minus their past controversies) might be worth a look. Self-hosting via Handshake domains is also an option if you’re feeling adventurous.

I dunno but I've been using metaname.nz for a long time now and can't complain.

+1 porkbun appreciatoor

Is it ethical to tell those puritanical assholes to go #fuck themselves? I'd say it's not only ethical, it's necessary, yo. You dig?

Also a +1 on porkbun

https://www.infomaniak.com 🇨🇭 is worth considering; I'm using them, and they are great; see e.g. https://github.com/vorburger/vorburger.ch-Notes/blob/develop/networking/infomaniak1.md

I use Namecheap. No idea if they’re ethical.

they take bitcoin which is why I use them

DreamHost

I was in the same position, using Gandi for years like a lot of free software folks. I’m switching to Porkbun, as they seem real. And they’re in the Pacific Northwest
