For anyone who is not aware, nostr:npub1getal6ykt05fsz5nqu4uld09nfj3y3qxmv8crys4aeut53unfvlqr80nfm has updated the limits on custodial balances to encourage users to move sats to self custody.

I just got this email from nostr:npub1kmwdmhuxvafg05dyap3qmy42jpwztrv9p0uvey3a8803ahlwtmnsnhxqk9 that spells it out.

Maximum amount to receive per transaction: 500K sats

Maximum balance: 1 million sats

Total transaction limit per week: 5 million sats

If youโ€™re still figuring out your self custody options, there are people here who can help!

Hey Daniel, would Mash (GetMash) wallet be a good option to store my Bitcoin instead of Alby?

Iโ€™ve never used Mash so give me a little time to look into it.

Great! GetMash is a self custody wallet, it links with your Google Account and it offers a Google Browser Extension, it accepts transactions via Lightning Network. Not sure about storing large amounts though. GetAlby has always been my favourite wallet, it's powerful as long as you keep your keys safe on a USB device.

I took a look at Mash. It's definitely not self-custodial, and I didn't find a browser extension, but I do see that they have partner integrations. It's kind of interesting for what it is, basically a content monetization product built for earning bitcoin. As a standalone service, I might use it, but it's not a suitable wallet replacement for nostr:npub1getal6ykt05fsz5nqu4uld09nfj3y3qxmv8crys4aeut53unfvlqr80nfm.

You get a Lightning address, but there is no compatibiltiy with apps like nostr:npub1xnf02f60r9v0e5kty33a404dm79zr7z2eepyrk5gsq3m7pwvsz2sazlpr5, so you're basically locked into their website. There's also a 100 sat minimum to send, so it's not really useful for zapping. If you use it to earn sats, you'd want to send them off to a different wallet at some point where you can custody them yourself, with Zeus (node in the phone) nostr:npub1mutnyacc9uc4t5mmxvpprwsauj5p2qxq95v4a9j0jxl8wnkfvuyque23vg, or Phoenix.

The tl;dr: It looks fun, but you still need to have other wallets anyway. And definitely don't store all your sats on a custodial service.

Great Daniel, thanks for your helpful feedback nostr:npub1getal6ykt05fsz5nqu4uld09nfj3y3qxmv8crys4aeut53unfvlqr80nfm will continue being my wallet of choice despite the limitations.

Sounds like youโ€™re on the right path! ๐Ÿค™

Well, I recently lost loads of Sats thanks to Elon Musk's Starship Bitcoin Giveaway. They say on their webpage that they double your donation as soon as the event is finished but when I sent them the money, I never got anything back. The page is still up and running. I even paid taxes because I sent it through BLINK. Are all of Elon Musk's businesses a Rip Off?

https://mempool.space/tx/c315c1976bac456617adfb4a08c8ce9ce9c57086693be0483d323d1bf5773484

Oh boyโ€ฆ

Wait, are you serious?

Darn serious Daniel you can check the mempool record on the link https://mempool.space/tx/c315c1976bac456617adfb4a08c8ce9ce9c57086693be0483d323d1bf5773484

Tried contacting BLINK and they said that it was out of their hands, the address I sent the donation to is responsible for returning the money, when i contacted them on the Starship Bitcoin Giveaway page, no one replies on the inbuilt platform chat. It's a scam page, if he never succeeds with starship he will take away all donations and have some bitcoin for himself, illegally earned. https://rocket-spacex.net/

You do realize this is definitely not connected to Musk or SpaceX in any way, right?

I don't know, Musk was on YouTube telling everyone to login to this address and donate Bitcoin for the Starship Launch if this was a scam, here's a great example of a well designed scam. You run a deep fake campaign on YouTube, everyone donates, than everyone finds out it was a scam. Bitcoin should have oversight over these scams taking into account the new developments in AI.

It obviously wasnโ€™t him. People need to develop better bullshit detectors. Why would someone like him ever need your bitcoin for anything? What โ€œoversightโ€ from bitcoin (not a company) are you expecting? This is a YouTube problem.

Donโ€™t trust, verify.

Glad you got to the bottom of this, such as I did. YouTube is the culprit.

Thanks for this ๐Ÿ™

yesterday alby gave me the strangest error while trying to sign up so i moved to nos2x, still cannot figure out lightning

What happened? Iโ€™ve been using it for almost year and it works fine for me.

i used it many times it is great, while signing up a new account it gave me this

exactly, i was like is it risky for me or you?

do you mind sharing what email you have used? (support@getalby.com)

to prevent spam we have a tool that tries to check the delivery before signup, your email then seems to be falsely classified.

sorry for this.

thanks, sent an email to them right now

Email address from an aliasing service?

it is @skiff.com

Well that's probably why. I've recently been seeing some services flag some SimpleLogin domains. Best option might be to purchase and use a new domain with an aliasing service.

i'm exploring self custody, do you know what is the simplest method?

Depends on what you want to custody. There are different solutions for different situations.

For example, if your goal is to keep sats within Lightning, youโ€™d do things differently than on-chain, where you can use offline cold storage.

lightning and lightning address, but later i want to also be able to take them on-chain

An always-on Lightning address is somewhat harder to do with self custody. You can use nostr:npub1xnf02f60r9v0e5kty33a404dm79zr7z2eepyrk5gsq3m7pwvsz2sazlpr5 with the embedded node as well as run your own node and point your nostr:npub1getal6ykt05fsz5nqu4uld09nfj3y3qxmv8crys4aeut53unfvlqr80nfm address to it. Zeus also has an on-chain wallet, but (as with any node) itโ€™s a hot wallet, so not the wisest choice for long-term HODLings.

Other options for self custodial Lightning are nostr:npub1mutnyacc9uc4t5mmxvpprwsauj5p2qxq95v4a9j0jxl8wnkfvuyque23vg, Phoenix, Blixt, and Breez.

For on-chain you can look at nostr:npub1jg552aulj07skd6e7y2hu0vl5g8nl5jvfw8jhn6jpjk0vjd0waksvl6n8n Jade, COLDCARD, and a few other bitcoin-only hardware signing devices like Foundation Passport and BitBox.

very helpful thanks ๐Ÿ™ now i'm thinking i should forget about lightning self custody and keep it with alby and then have self custody for on-chain.

about on-chain, if i used bluewallet on an offline phone like this: https://youtu.be/f-8elm8xCLs is this the same level of security assuming no one gets his hand on the physical device?

MMMMMMMMMMMMMM EVERY TIME I THINK TO GO SELF CUSTODY FOR LN THE FEES ARE BANANAS AHHHHHHHHHHHH

Thatโ€™s because your fucking node is always down.

IT WONT EVER FULLY SYNC

THIS IS WHY I DONT LIKE LIGHTNING

BECAUSE LIGHTNING DOESNT LIKE ME

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Itโ€™s not like we run a Telegram group with 300 people or anything who could help you.

Wicked burn.

Okay. Homework. I will get this shit back to good. I will redeem myself.

the cool kids i guess

I still haven't found info on self custody of lightning. I have a BTC wallet and full node.

You need to run a full node plus an implementation of Lightning, i.e., LND or CLN.
