Back in my day, we went to school with a foot of snow on the roads, sliding off the mountain roads into ditches, and then walked a mile and a half home to go sled riding all day.

back in Idaho in the 70s they didn't cancel school until it was -40

That's cold. I remember during the blizzard of 93, we had school cancelled for a week when the temperatures were in the -30s.

There just wasn’t the concept of helicopter moms and dads back then. That changed along with everything else. Always will and always does.

Eh, we had them, but they weren't as prevalent.

The helicopter parent phenomenon can be damaging to a child’s independence however not as damaging as the child exploitation and abuse coverups that have been exposed during the era of helicopter parents.

Institutions that parents were meant to trust (Catholic Church, Boy Scouts of America, USA swimming, USA Gymnastics) proved themselves unworthy of that trust and parents have reacted to the extreme. However, I would argue that parents limiting the sovereignty of their children is their responsibility (and not the government’s).

I am a full on helicopter parent of 3. Home schooled, watched over, loved, and allowed them to make as many mistakes as possible.

Uphill both ways.

Hmm. Well, I did have a 1 mile walk from my house to my bus stop, but in bad weather like that day, my mom or dad normally drove us to the bus in the morning. But we always walked home in the afternoon.

My kids don't even go outside if it's below -15. At my school it's -30.

Bullshit.

You didn't have a smartphone

I don't know how a smartphone would have changed any of this?

We had more time to play and make real friends back then. I don't think teens today live their childhood the way we used to do.

They do not.

You didn't have bitcoin 🥹

Too bad it doesn’t snow much anymore

True. We don't get the type of storms we used to get. 🥹

I had a relative who would go to school by dogsled from a town a few miles away back in the day. If I showed you where one school was in relation to some harsh weather and how far they walked to get there — it would blow your mind.

Absolutely. We’d frequently slide after school on that beautiful fresh bounty of snow, and sometimes we snowmobile to school as we got older.

Dogsled? 👀👀👀 That's wild.

YEAH SOCIETY IS SLOWLY ALLOWING ITSELF TO BECOME MORE PUSSIFIED

When my bus wrecked, at 10 years old I went and told the bus driver that I was walking home and I did it. I could not imagine bus driver's letting this happen today. And if a kid tried it, they'd probably be disciplined for it. SMH.

Good ol' days
