First year trying. Much bigger plans for next year

Love it 😍
I've fought off gnats, rats, and most recently worms! It's not easy, but it's rewarding. A couple tomatoes finally turning red, just as plants are beginning to get a bit sick and heat too much anyway. They're tough to grow fruit on!!
Arugula?
Think it's hearts of Romain, but we weren't sure in the end. Long story, but planted 3 types of lettuce and a pest ravaged it repeatedly before I took serious measures (hidden cam, netting, and a trap), so we seem to have only gotten one type of the 3 in the end, but forgot what we planted exactly! Not our favorite lettuce, but too late to plant more
I usually cover with net and it seems to do the trick for most bugs
The gnats hung out in the soil so nets didn't do much. Slowed down watering a tad, and sprayed some neem and soap water, which seemed to work. Yesterday a side planter of sage and thyme that was coming in nicely got decimated by two little green worms... sadness.
Show us your garden/yield!!
I don’t have one at the moment. I had to tear down the one at the rental when I moved. It’s a bit late to plant stuff but I may still try a few things. Our summers get really hot and not much grows unless you protect from the sun and I don’t usually. I’ll eventually plant some lettuce, peppers, arugula, tomatoes, parsley, basil, herbs, onions etc
I had a blackberry wine for several years. I kept cutting it and it kept growing back wilder every time and always a ton of berries.
Vine
I need serious tomato plant pruning education for next time. I can get them 6 feet tall in no time, but not so much fruit.
I guess I get lucky, I usually don’t even prune and get a ton of tomatoes. Oh I forgot I had limes, bay leaf 🍃 plant, rosemary, avocados, lemons. All had to be cut down 😿 super sad
lol that's not fair at all! Friend of mine same thing, and his plants aren't nearly as large as mine!!
Avocados is peak gardening imo. Noshole recent showed off a giant tree she has. Would kill for one of those...
I had 2 trees, they never yielded much but were just starting to recover and now they’re gone :(
California is perfect for avocados. Knew some people with a giant tree in their back yard and I can’t say I wasn’t jealous!
I always have basil growing for most of my life. Never had an issue. Built a porch, planted some basil in pots on the porch, and somehow they got infiltrated by grubs and they completely destroyed all my basil. Ive never lost basil to bugs any time in my life. I will never financially recover from this.
Try companionship gardening to improve yield
Heard of that, for mostly avoiding pests though. Eg basil next to tomatoe (basil seems fairly bug resistant), but will look into this more next season
Basil, chives, spring onions. It’s astonishing how close you can put them together too. Consider a bean in any bed as they fix nitrogen to soil
You can also plant a penis chilli at the front door which to spark conversation with visitors 🙄

These look amazing. Peppers and herbs are a no brainer for next season. Have a dozen or so basil plants (we went overboard) that we cook (and decorate cocktails with) regularly.
Yeah just keep adding and testing every year. I got to 70% or so self sufficient a few years ago but then moved to somewhere that nearly nothing grew well. Moving again soon so back to square 1!
Yeah, likely moving in about a year or so, so holding back on the bigger plans for now. Can't wait to have entire patches of glorious crops. Soon... 🌝
I keep leaving fruit trees just as they get prolific. Buyer of house in Spain got highly productive lemons, oranges, limes and avocado. This time it’s finger limes and lemons and papayas. One day maybe I’ll stick around long enough but I’d love to go back and visit some of my old houses to see how they’re doing now
They are nice to have! Grew up in house with something like 20 citrus plants, including the coveted blood orange.
Must try it with my children!
The peppers are so hot (pictured here are a bunch of the runts we removed recently, rest are more full sized)! The hot sauce we made will kill you if you don't dilute it a second time, but boy does it have some good flavor (habanero and jalapeño). Those two plants are thriving too! Easiest maintenance of the bunch
Killing it! Garlic next year 👊
Ooh, definitely need to do garlic. Keep forgetting about that. Wonder if that's a summer plantable thing...feels like it would be.
Depending on your zone your planting will be different.
Im in 4a. So i sow my garlic just before the first frost marking the winter.
So as soon as the ground thaws the shoots start to pop. My garlic is about 12-18 inches high now.
There is also summer garlic that can be planted after the frost has thawed in the spring.
Worth doing some research for your area
🍅
Funny coming from you. Came to comments to see what you might have posted, but guess it's easy enough to find with the hashtag/past posts
I will document my lettuce for you, its been a cold start here
Just picked/salvaged my first ripe-ish tomato. It was this size many weeks ago but just stayed green until recent pruning. Some sort of "black" variety I accidentally grabbed instead of heirloom I meant to get (my other one is heirloom), so might explain the odd color a bit 😅

Yodl that tomato looks great! I just planted my tomato seedlings heres My little patch so far.

Bugs in the distance must be licking their chops. Patience lads, soon we shall invade and feast! Having mine in random large pots may have helped avoid most pest problems for me, or just luck, but I gather they're among most appetizing for bugs.
Good luck!
