Planning to acquire the Ruger LCP II in .22 LR for the wife's carry pistol.

The gun is small enough for her to actually carry in real life every day, whether in a belly band, in a pocket, or in an off body bag.

It's an ideal rig for women: light racking action, low recoil, and multiple redundant safeties, including a physical switch.

The goal is to develop her comfort and proficiency in shooting and carry systems so that she always has something on hand when I am not present.

An extra mag and a slim tourniquet are natural extensions to the system that can be layered in over time.

It's not about the "best", it's about training on the basics and developing a system that won't be left at home no matter what.

I fired this gun.

While it's light and accurate the .22 LR is inherently less reliable than center-fire cartridges due to rimfire ignition and inconsistent powder charges, especially in bulk ammo. Using high-quality ammunition significantly improves reliability. Also, the small slide and light recoil spring make it somewhat vulnerable to fouling and dry firing a .22 LR without snap caps can damage the firing pin or chamber face.

Conclusion: Not a duty weapon. While reasonably reliable for a rimfire, it's not a substitute for a center-fire carry gun in a life-or-death situation.

At 0-10 ft it's fine, and a gun she is comfortable with and can shoot is better than not having one, which is the appropriate starting place.

She's not on duty, is not a cop or a soldier. Those are husband's jobs.

Agreed just speaking from the experience with that gun. She'll be alright with this with good ammo and good maintenance

Looking at CCI, which is owned by Speer (gold standard 9mm ammo).

Their copper tipper, FMJ offering looks top of line. No need for hallow point at this power; 40gr of high penetration is more reasonable considering the tradeoffs.

Hoping these are reliable. Will train 100% on these if they are and use the same ammo for self defense.

Their segmented hallow point is interesting, but not convinced it could penetrate through thick jackets or jeans when needed and don't have the time to do thorough testing.

The round tips look satisfactory for us.

"After shooting thousands of rounds of 22 caliber ammunition over the last few years, out of different pistols,My primary load is CCI mini mag 40 grain copper plated solid ball ammo.It has never failed me."

Funny you'd mention CCI. CCI Mini-Mag, Federal Punch .22 is what I was using with the Ruger LCP. This was like 4-5 years ago.

Cant stand Federal myself.

good man

I have one of those LCPlls in 380.

Yup. A lot more power for the tradeoff of more recoil and less capacity.

For me 22 is a better starting point, thinking of the wife. Once she masters that who knows.

I don’t have personal experience with that gun, but I would be cautious about using a rimfire cartridge as a defensive firearm. Feeding might be unreliable and rimfire cartridges have a much higher failure rate than center fire. Can she handle a .380?

CC Minimag or Uppetcut 22LR is sufficient for this usecase.

CC is owned by Speer; Uppercut designed to be the Gold Dot of 22LR.

Released just 2 years ago.

Have a look. First true full metal jacket.
