Spent several weeks running GrapheneOS with the battery optimization setting enabled. This setting is supposed to cap charging at 80% to increase battery longevity.

For whatever reason, enabling this setting really killed my battery life because many times after plugging in to charge overnight, it wouldn't even charge to 80% and I risked having the phone run out of juice before the end of the day.

I have a stock Samsung and experienced the same issue

Same here

I had a similar experience, at least in perception. My battery life won't last throughout the day anymore, but I do not think the 80% setting is the cause just yet.

I used the 80% limit for awhile, some time later I started turning my phone off at night with my phone on the charger. With the phone 'off', it would charge to 100%.

Now it feels like it doesn't hold a charge as well, but no actual tests were performed.

imo useless function. charging from 20 to 100 my 6 years old android could get one day easily. do not drain under 20% vast majority of time and do not keep it on 100% in charger for too long and you will be good for years

You don't know what you are talking about. Go back to your iPhone.

What even is the point of this? Just change the battery when it’s not holding charge anymore.

I get it for a laptop or tablet you don’t need it to run all day on battery so that makes sense but for a phone this is plain stupid.

You don't know what you are talking about. Go back to your iPhone.

Says the smart guy who is not aware that iPhones, iPads and MacBooks also have this feature enabled by default 😂.

I do use it on the iPad and MacBook since I never need to use them on battery for more than a few hours at a time.

I don't care about Apple cucks. NGMI. HFSP.

I only started to use Apple products about 3 years ago actually. While I enjoy the great hardware, I hate the closed ecosystem. So, more open alternatives are always in my mind. But thanks for the constructive discussion! You seem like a great guy 😂. I hope you’ll have a better day tomorrow.

I think it is usage dependent. It's fine for light usage people, but not so much for heavy users. On workdays I start at 80, end at 40.

If I go full phone degen mode, that's a midday charge.

That's why I tried it out in the first place, after I heard about the bug. My phone is always up to date.

Hi jameson 🏴‍☠️🫶😉 That sounds frustrating. It seems like the battery optimization setting might not be functioning as expected in your case. Sometimes these features can behave inconsistently depending on the device or software version. It could be worth checking if there are any updates for GrapheneOS or experimenting with disabling the feature to see if it improves your battery life. You might also want to check if any apps are draining the battery more than usual. It’s a balance between longevity and practicality, so it’s all about finding what works best for your usage! 🤟⚡️

I had the same issue. After turning the function off, it's back to normal. No apparent battery damage.

My guess is, that the percentage measure somehow gets confused.

I thought most phones don't actually let you charge to 100%, its easier to limit at the converter/battery over protection point then OS so hardware makers don't have to worry about different OS handling such tasks.

It's intentional that it doesn't do it all the time. It needs to charge to full capacity occasionally to allow recalibration of the feature and the battery capacity. Usually you only need to do this once or twice.

When you are fully charged the phone goes into bypass charging, so the device becomes powered by the charger and it doesn't charge the battery at all.

Do you think it’s worth it to use graphene over iOS?

I do, but I've always been anti walled garden apple ecosystem.

Just hear a lot of complaints about graphene that makes hesitate to make the switch. Like the camera, keyboard, and other issues I guess. I don’t really know much else

works pretty well IMO, I never had an issue with the keyboard and you can install the Pixel Camera.

I think the gap is bigger between iOS vs Android than Android vs GrapheneOS

Doesn’t installing the pixel camera defeat the purpose of using graphene or is that extreme?

weird

I've used it since the update and its been totally normal

kinda miss that extra 20% sometimes

but otherwise normal.
