Seems like at the very least, it would be beneficial for clients to add a feature where you can request to only see + get notifications for replies to your posts if you follow that person making the reply.

This would make it so that people don’t have to see harassing/spammy/garbage replies to their posts from random people, and avoid experiences like #[0] had yesterday

Thank you. Yesterday was horrific.

I'm so sorry for that raishma 🫂

Thank you 🫂🙏🏽 good thing you weren’t there.

I have read every single post, and it is horrifying. It is simply immutable harassment. I am sorry that you had to go through this, but we promise you, Raishma, that we will do everything we can to ensure it never happens again.

Kieran, Vitor & Will please do something

so true, king. we need to #nostrblock these people

We need more web of trust based filtering and sharing of blocklists (which already works in some clients)

That too! The best way seems to be a combination of algorithmic solutions like that for day to day, and more “brute force” methods like what I posted for cases where a user wants to take no chances.

What a relief to hear this 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

The option to opt-in to as a setting is nice as it would be controlled by the end user. Better than arbitrary blocks and shadow banning according to the will/mood of some dictator-in-the-making that own an app or relay that has a bigger share of the nostr "universe".

The web version is amazing!

You want to ruin Nostr like Mastodon and Twitter? Go back to your safe space

we should have an account that publicly shares a banlist with the whole of nostr to make sure everyone can block these people

Let's call it #nostrblock

Those are easily abused, never liked this approach

Moreover Sybil is cheap, at the end of the day we already know the answer: proof of work aka sats per view, I’m reading notes from npubs I don’t follow only if you pay me to do it. This shifts the npub-list building to real life or other platforms, would that be ok?

Perhaps a great deprioritization of posts coming from those not Nth degree to your current followed? Kind of how linkedin does it… You have to be introduced to send a direct message… I don’t like the idea of banning direct messages however… Perhaps just a ‘unknown or sketchy sender’ category

Mastodon approach 💀

Who controls it? What’s the criteria?

On mastodon, it's the trannies that control it. See

https://mastodon.lol/tags/fediblock

This is what you all will do to ruin nostr

Seems centralized

Yes, the blocklists are centralized and all the relays blindly accept them. There is no way to face your accuser

This is the inevitable for Nostr because people don';t understan d the block nutton

Cancel culture coming to Nostr confirmed!!!???

Bad idea, but this won't stop people from trying it.

where do we share those blocklists though? I think we should share them under a hashtag, something like #nostrblock

FBA scraper for #nostrblock (NBA?) when?

soon™

Probably not as trivial

i, for one, think that fracturing the network is a good idea

Yes, let's have everyone live in their own echo chambers

Ability to configure a network of trust is really great. I think options for a user to set who they want to engage with would go a long way. Users could choose clients/apps that they knew supported those features.

Or people can just press the block button themselves instead of crying for someone else to do it for them.

How about having a list of blocked accounts I can take to another client like I do with following? I mean linked to my npub like my profile description. Running one account on different devices/clients and blocking the same people could become quite time consuming.

I’m pretty sure Iris already limits you to people you follow and people they follow. On SSB we call this “two hops”. I agree a one-hop filter is a good idea too.

Iris is actually showing content from anyone that your social network has interacted with, without regard to the follow distance. I can change that, and make the parameters configurable.

The current policy already works quite well, but sometimes unwanted content swims into your social network.

Is “your social network” the defined as the people you follow?

One of the interesting things would be to make ranking more configurable and separate, so that we can play with it easily.

One example is that I would prefer to see posts from people where I like them more often. But there are a lot of ranking choices to be made, and A/B testing is super important (having multiple ranking algos and switching between them would be even cooler, but I know that it's not the highest priority in client development right now)

Definitely considering an *option* to limit to people you've interacted with and degrees of separation. Friends-only mode

Degrees of separation would be 🤌🏻. And if you do still come across something awful, being able to see which of your follows are following that person

>being able to see which of your follows are following that person

we gotta expand on that, I for one don't want to associate with such people. We should publicly shame people who would permit or even enjoy those terrible posts. Maybe we could post their hashes under a hashtag? Something like #nostrblock

This is a great idea. Human nature makes almost impossible (for some people) to deny requests from acquaintances. Looking forward to see how you manage to achieve it! Thanks for your hard work 💪

yeah, this needs to be a thing. Something like #nostrblock would be nice

what, you mean like #nostrblock ?

FYI the worst pain you can inflict upon an internet troll is a shadowban. She tries and tries and waits for the rush of the notification bell but it never comes, robbing her blind of all the fun.

Nostr has a perfectly functional decentralized shadowban function baked into the protocol. You detect a troll, you mute it. Behind the scenes the npub goes into a blacklist, and the relays won't even send you these notes.

IMO we don't need any kneejerk technical solution, only to collectively upgrade our behavior to better fit this new, freer environment.

Complaining about trolls to developers is fiat mentality. Give them a taste of your boot instead with the tools that are already available.
