Did we become the product today?

If you're not on Twitter, then no
Not today, Satan!
Only if you made someone else money
Arguably anything a home says now can make some else money because people read your stuff.
Anyone*
So why aren't you making money off of what you say?
Itβs not an issue yet as thereβs not much to monetize in this manner but thatβs kinda the point - to promote your stuff with zapvertising, in essence making everyone the product again?
Iβm just exploring the thought. I havenβt taken a hard stance on either side yet.
It's making the advertiser money if they get sales, and those get zapvertised to money for seeing it. What's a more favorable approach? Silence? Middlemen? Beuler?
I do think nostr is at a size and niche where it barely matters, I think with growth it could get irksome. I think then sensible parameters would have to be put into place. Like choose to see, or only show from a minimum payment amount or somesuch thing Β―β \β _β (β γβ )β _β /β Β―
Iβm traditional social media you are the product because advertiser monetizes your attention but also due to network effects. You are literally needed to be there for the product to thrive.
You the user think itβs free. But youβre paying with your data, and in some cases your wallet.
With zapvertizing, once again you may not be earning anything on a zap to someone else (with their ad) but your attention is now monetized. Be it via brand awareness exposure or via direct action. You donβt have to get paid to now be the product.
Good question! Still wrapping my head around it but I think it's too early to tell.
Regarding the highest zap under a note: highest bidder gets the attention. You can zap your own post with a higher amount. Both can be automated. We can very quickly get to a point where the cost/impression is not viable to use as an 'ad'.
Regarding the user getting a notification of a zap with content attached: to prevent spam we need an option so set a threshold for showing the zap or included content in your notifications. So that will solve for itself.
What do you think?
π€ I'm going off of outside observation but yes... but if it's consensual that changes the dynamic. Not sure how many would consent to that once the novelty wears away & pharmaceutical companies discover nostr... it sounds more like a cool fan club/superchat/blue check type privilege to me than a functional ad model in the long term.
Advertising is inevitable. Shame there isn't a way to foster & reward passive & organic behavior with it. Maybe eventually
Damus users maybe, the rest of became confused. I even saw the release note last night but still took a while to put 2+2 together. Moreso than anywhere else your client creates your experience.
