Do you realize just how much of a bargain Nostr is? You pay relays a one time fee and never see ads, there is no risk of your email or phone number leaking and you can't get cancelled.
Way better deal than being the product.

The early internet is back !
Don’t think it will stay one time fee, theres no way to pay bills this way.
Right now we’re just testing dummies and we are getting a huge bargain. For wide adoption to happen this won’t scale. Relays will have to be subsidized with some sort of sponsorship model or revenue split with companies who use the relay services.
Agreed
if nostr improves efficiency then anyone can run a relay and we wont need to pay
Jimmy could fund the relays for us with his zappage. Even better bargain!
Maybe us early adopters will be grandfathered in 🤞😂

In my opinion paid relays are not the answer but to educate the public in general that owning your data, self hosting and adding your own relays with redundancy is the optimal path.
Not your relay, not your data
Private relays will add not only filters for adds (which most high end WiFi routers and paid VPN services add already) but they can implemented as well censorship, filter means they decide what you see and what not.... So another Twitter in the making...
You can backup your private relay data as well, so data losses would be a matter of proper backup discipline and efficient implementation of cron
Unless I am missing something , please let me know, because it seems quite unappealing to me

The best part of nostr is it’s decentralized so can test all of this out and let the market decide.
One step change will be when clients can add and subtract relays automatically to find users notes instead of having to connect to 20 relays.
Interesting, only problem is that since all or most pioneers started with public relays, their genesis posts would never show and those posts, IMO are priceless, a way around would be to sync all post of the paid customers on private and paid you use with the public relays...
There are some scripts out there that will allow you to download your history, that would at least allow for a backup in case a relay decides to remove your data if you leave it.
I wrote down some thoughts on this in a post.
what a pile of bs, you have no contract with the relay
I wouldn't phrase it that way, but you're right regarding paid relays. I've experienced a few simply vanishing. On the other hand, the fees paid at this point are tiny.
I think it has to be a subscription model to be sustainable. Couple that with an at home personal sovereignty device that captures your data for longer storage and possible re-relay to recover from lapsed subscriptions.
This seems to be the best path going forward.
I agree, however this pricing model is not sustainable. Soon enough you will have to pay monthly fee for those services, I believe. Still amazing … just saying….
Few.
It also makes apps like two-factor auth obsolete 😉
The one time fee isn’t a bargain bc you can’t tell the relay will be around next month.
Many early stage businesses offer their service for free — without ads.
And if you think relays will never sell your IP address and other metadata you’re very naïve
