Basically, it’s not a bug — just a quirk of how decentralized networks like Nostr work. Your real follower count is probably somewhere in between, or even higher depending on relay coverage.

There is no centralized authority to provide follower counts on nostr. Follower accounts are calculated by looking at contact lists that you use. And there's no good way to calculate this quickly or accurately for every single relay that exists or npub that exists. Follower accounts are not a good metric in a decentralized network.
If clients can't give an honest answer, why give an answer at all? Without some sort of bold and ever-present caveat, it's low-key lying to the user.
I'm in agreement. I've mentioned before that follower counts should be removed. It's an archaic metric that doesn't apply here. Who will be the first?

it is a good reason, bu it think some people want to know if they have more or less follower to communicate with their community.
Some other notes talk about a way to make influencer come here from other social media, this is an important data for them.
This number don't have to be exact, it should be a "rounded" one like ~100 ~1k ~1M
and not an exact number.
It would respect the fact that decentralized network don't have this exact value, but also the need to know "how many follower i can communicate with" for the ones that care about that.

Look at the example at the start of the chain though. There's a pretty big difference between 800 followers and 20,000 followers. It makes the whole network look silly. And it can't be more exact without full-network crawling and indexing.
If you see a job advertisement with a salary listed as "From $100 to 10,000 per month" will you take that company seriously?
It is true, so it is better to find a new way to display it.
You think it is better to say "no one know how many follower you really have"...
It is not serious for the ones who really have a business with that number.
Perhaps, as i said a round number or a kind of "badge" could be enough, and associated with the name of the nostr user.
And for some who want the real number they will have to wait for this number after a long relay crawl (perhaps a tool in "settings" section of apps).

But i just remember someone said if you want to check the "true" jack, or other famous user here, just watch the number of follower, the higher have more chances to be the one.
If you remove this, they will have to be another way...
As i told you a kind of badge could be fine and associated with a rounder number of followers (like a up level in video games).
Badges ever exists, for primal users, why not for followers ?

Primal is probably calculating using more relays, including their own Primal one. You're on their recommended list, so everyone who tries out Primal auto-follows you, including bots and stuff.

☝️this. I'll add that Primal gets there counts from a cache server, while damus calculate on the fly from your relays, contributing to the huge difference.
npub.world gives a more accurate count, not including bots and scam accounts.

Yes, Damus has live counts. The number is actually more like "followers on relays you are currently subscribed to".
So, if you sent out a note right this minute, from Damus, those are the npubs you could possibly reach.

ya this is so corrext. I don't like the followers list on nostr because it loads too slow. They need to fix it because the followers list is useful to find other users.
They also need to charge 3 Satoshi in order to follow users that way it would filter bots, scammers and make the nostr followers list more organic.

Follower count means absolutely nothing on nostr. Actual engagement and zaps are the signal. Everything else (including "trending" lists) is just noise.
suprised that everyone in this thread didn't give a correct answer. I guess there is lots of confusion about this.
the way to count follows on the protocol is the pull all the public contact lists you are on. contact lists are big, like 100kb+. meaning for damus to count 816, it would have had to download ~40-80MB of data.
strfry relay caps out at around 500 max results, so damus will only ever be able to count 500-1000 follows
primal apps are not a nostr clients, so it can do some more tricks like use their centralized server to count things. it is slightly more accurate but not really, since primal doesn't have the view of the entire network.
one way damus is going to solve this is by caching the counts locally over time, so it becomes more accurate. but yeah, there is no real solution since its not really possible to count natively on the protocol in an efficient or accurate way.
