Umbrel is amazingly easy to set up, check it out! I already have a Bitcoin node, this Nostr backup relay & Syncthing for file sharing installed, running on a 10 year old desktop with 4gb ram.

Nice. I might pick up a spinning drive for the blockchain data, and use the SSD for the main drive, I've got another SATA port available.
If youβre concerned about data loss just Raid 1 them if your motherboard allows it
I'm hoping it will be as easy as copying the blockchain data to the root of new hdd, then mounting the drive in place of that folder. I'll have an external back up drive for the entire system in place soon in case of disaster.

Donβt get me wrong, you CAN use Nostr DMs obviously. Theyβre just not robust or reliable in their current form. No amount of wanting them to be is going to change that. Most people have other messaging apps, so find something they have and use that. Itβs not like I can say what people already have. I have half a dozen apps for messaging various people, depending what they use. Itβs just the state of things. The best you could probably do with Nostr is to run your own relay and only allow people you DM with on Nostr to connect to it so it preserves those messages.

If it works for what you need, then by all means. π€ Nostr DMs just donβt have the features I need in order to ditch other services, even for messaging other Nostr users. Random messages here and there, quick questions, etc, those work for me directly on Nostr. But anything where I need a more feature rich app has to move off Nostr. Iβm sure it will improve, but for now I see no reason to suffer through that period. Nostr is for public communication as far as Iβm concerned. π€·ββοΈ

I doubt is a client query problem but not relay. Yours are more stable on DM than others (for me)

If the client you are using doesn't store data locally, you will lost your old messages. Blowater and Iris stores DMs locally. (not sure for mobile clients)

Re a good DM app, I think Session is good - apparently it's like Signal but it's decentralized, and doesn't require a phone number even. Also, Element app uses (or can use?) a decentralized protocol which people can run relays on raspberry pi.
Iβd go as far as a micro app for dms but nothing outside nostr

If you run umbrel there is a super easy one click private relay you can set up that backs up all your stuff.
If you're relying on other relays, you run the risk of them deleting your data (which is likely since they have to prune at some point)
