I want containers. I need a full, containerized pipeline. It needs to be orchestrated and scheduled and monitored.

I need something much more advanced and comprehensive.

And I want Elasticsearch, Docker, GitLab, Immich, and Jenkins, dammit. Give me the big guns. πŸ˜‚ I'm working on Kafka and Kubernetes at the office, rolling out to staging multiple times per day, and then I come on here and it's like, "Oh, you changed a button? Oh, no, that's really scary. Let's think about it for a few days."

And I absolutely hate PRs. Let me roll it out to staging and test it manually. If it doesn't work, I'll roll it back. Nobody is gonna die because a Nostr app on a demo system didn't show their notes for 5 minutes.

And just to save $10 a month. I spend more than that on a bar of chocolate. Ridiculous. Everyone involved in this is wealthy. Including me.

Everyone is a cheapskate, around here. A bunch of literal Bitcoin millionaires who won't rent computing for 20Β’/month. Literally! Good stuff costs money. It just does.

Fucking tightwads, I'm so done.

you should try doing it all on a home server? you can run minikube on your laptop, or on an old upgraded PC, .. the thing is, hosting is so overpriced, you wouldnt believe some of the server bills ive seen, and this is what can break a project (wasteful costs).

tho I know your internet is slow, is it possible to spend on faster internet because it would enable you to run more services *and be fast for everything you do..

if not, yeah you should rent a VPS and run minikube on that instead.

i recommend gcloud for kubernetes and containerized pipelines, they make it so easy to run anyone can do it. they did invent kube afterall.

I'd have to get Starlink, to be faster. Not necessarily cheaper.

you should get it. starlink is nice. basically, CI/CD is something that can cost a lot on a rented server because it is very bursty and much of it just sits idle, till it needs to run and then it sucks if its a slow server when it does need to run. fast internet is key. laptops are way more powerful than any low tier server.

I don't need the entire DevOps on the server. The server just needs to run the QCd containers.

I have Jenkins and Docker local, already, on the NAS.

The NAS is to slow to run the apps, tho.

Starlink is out of the question because my husband hates Elon.

oh noes.. i assume if it's the only thing that is available that is faster, you must be on geosync satellite or a modem, or a dsl that is very far from its trunk. 😭

DSL

Next street over got glassfiber. 😭

youll be able to get it for christmas probably then

And then I have to admin, myself. Which is a lot of work.

its not that bad 😁 once you have it setup it just runs.

Unless someone doesn't like you.

if you can run a CI system and publish images you are like 70% of the way there.. why depend on others when you can do end to end deployments yourself?

Oh, you mean that part, yeah. I meant, I don't want to turn my laptop into an Internet host for my apps.

It'll be a lot of apps.

I want custom editions of lots of stuff. Editions I don't need to PR. πŸ˜‚

You can't imagine how much I absolutely despise PRs. Shit is giving me a stroke.

you already know bash and ssh tho right? what about systemd? wireguard is easy, just search github for angristan

The problem isn't that I don't know how to do this or that I haven't done it in the past. I run the local test systems at work and we manage the church website. I hosted my first webpage before most of these guys were even born. πŸ˜‚

The problem is that I am too agreeable and want to work together with others. But everyone else is much slower than I am, for a whole host of reasons. They want to double-check and nitpick and micromanage everything I do, but I do so much that controlling me turns into a full-time job, so they're like, Please stop working, Stella.

I need someplace that I can finally work at my own pace: very very fast.

I want to turn the ship around:

I build, I test, I ship. They can pull the changes they like into their own instance, at their own pace, at their leisure. They don't need PRs for a pull they trigger themselves.

PRing the fastest dev, so that the slowest dev can follow along, is commie. I'm done with it.

No more begging.

No more pleading.

No more asking for permission.

I can get a server for you, it’s gonna dissolve in the infrastructure I already operate and pay for.
