We need subtitles if they're from the north
Discussion
Still I'm a sucker for a good scott accent🤷🏽
Have you seen Sweet Sixteen by Ken Loach? I'd be amazed if someone in the US would manage to understand 10% of the dialogue lol
I avve not boyo but eet haaz meh intreast!
Tbf even the releases in England had subtitles for this lolol
That's what I'm saying yo
Whether or not we as Americans don't understand is irrelevant. We get the same DVDs.
If the queen can't understand it it's subtitled for us over here. But if she was like "oh pop pop thas just Ricky bein a knob" then no subtitles
And the subtitles translate into American English? I need to see this lol
Ok let's find a movie and I'll screen shot for you
What's a movie with a good mix of accents?
Hostel
Naked. Not sure it has a good mixture or mixture of accents tho. Can barely remember. Um, what about something like those Kidulthood films? Not really a fan but would be curious what London slang translated as into American
not recommending Kidulthood, but would be interested in seeing the translation into american
Ok so I started doing a cookout McGregor one then I switched to kidulthood
Connor only had subtitles to emphasize stuff
Kidulthood no subs 🤷🏽
I did turn on subs so you can see but it was pretty 1 for 1

Lol multiple videos play all their audio at the same time. Amazing sound collage tbh lolol
KES! 😂
It is funny tho, obviously as US is the dominant culture, a lot of British people will understand something say The Wire. But it's not really a two way street. Not saying this is a problem lol. Just the way it is lol. But it is ostensibly the same language lol. It's just obvious but still funny.
It's in no way a two way street.
I find myself constantly like "wow! _____ did a great event in _____" and everyone over here is like oh yeah! So good! Then a British person is like "uh what do you mean that sucked"
Like all British people do shitty American accents (picking Boston or Texas usually) but everyone, even Americans are like wow! So believable! But we Americans try any accent not our own and people are like BOO YOU SUCK
Is this real? Do you get subtitles lol?
I imagine Americans would struggle with a lot of slang usage too. I don't think you'd understand a word of something Glaswegian either lol
For the most part nah. If it's English they just let us be, unless it's specifically in the movie as a joke like you're not supposed to understand someone.
But those jokes are usually the British making fun of each other, which is why I mentioned the north. It's usually cockney accents and chavvs making fun of northerners and Scotts. 🤷🏽 Such as this video:
In it they would most likely have Catherine Tate be unsubbed but Tenant subbed for the joke even though in my opinion the opposite is more understandable
there’s a brazilian movie which actually DOES HAVE subtitles in portuguese. the background is in the countryside of nordeste region, basically another dialect — as it is in every region. wait, I’ll find it.
Please
I would assume City of God (sorry v obvious example here) is full of slang that even a lot of Brazilians wouldn't understand(?) Maybe(?)
Or that baillefunk stuff?
it’s not only the dialect, tbh, but also (mainly) the accent. city of god wasn’t a problem at all, actually, as “carioquês” is the official language here due to globo’s soap operas, all basically in rio.
PROIBIDÃO, repeat after me
I do understand a bit of Portuguese bit struggle to actually speak it. It comes out v strangely more russian than I want lol
how come??
I think maybe there is also a generational and class gap in understanding in some examples. I know some people who wouldn't understand a lot of Kidulthood or grime or whatever. Just wondering if this would be the same in city of god/baillefunk? Or is it so huge that it's p much understood by everyone?
Have you read The City & The City by China Mieville? Feels like maybe this lolol

#bookstr hijack ;)
I’ve actually translated it to portuguese, lmao 🤪
but nah, not the case. it could be the case, if he wanted, but meirelles made sure it’d be accessible to everyone
erratum: the scar, not the city and the city 🫡
I've not read that one. Any good?
it’s the sequence of perdido street station. kinda good, but I prefer his articles tbh, lol, the way he mixes politics with pop culture
Ohhh I've read that. That's the only other one I've read. Not read his articles but saw him dona talk about Lovecraft or something a long time ago. Very entertaining and engaging. Not that I can remember any of the content of his talk lol
quit the weed, berries, quit the weed (sorry, u just remind me of berries A LOT, that other alt u have)
Oh I'm not familiar with that alt, I think it must be when I'm in one of my alt trances 🫨🫨🫨🫨
u fool me not, german (“but I’m english”, no u ain’t)
I'm learning so many languages for mein alt career schadenfreude
ho dovuto imparare l'italiano in uno di loro
I used to date a girl from Glasgow. I love me a Scott accent🤷🏽 I'm just a sucker for accents in general
Welsh is another one.
Hot. Dated one. Can't understand her though. And one of those all the British would make fun of.
Anything. They'd blend anything on the Welsh.
"Oh the bloody powers out again! I see the gawdamn Welsh forgot the petrol again"
