You can't use Nostr and get away from Bitcoin unless you follow an extremely low number of people, like maybe 5-10. I tried blocking anyone that mentioned Bitcoin for a week or two, along with filters for BTC and Bitcoin, and that wasn't enough. It proved to me that you can't really curate your own feed, unless you code; you can only sway it so far.
This would be easier to achieve on the side of relays, ie a relay that bans the talk about bitcoin; whereas on the client side, you can connect to this relay only and voilá, no need of blocking no one, since any other like minded person would be in that relay as well
How would the relay know which content is bitcoin related? Most people here talk about bitcoin without mentioning it.
Beyond the basic word filters and moderating, I'm guessing the sole title and loci of the relay might be good enough to clarify that the relay is unwelcome for bitcoin topics. One doesn't normally go to where is explicitly unwelcome, unless looking for problems 😅
So, after relegating all of my input from this one relay, what's the point of using Nostr?
Well, `What's the point of using social media (any kind) if relegating all the input received BUT one (in this case, banning the bitcoin topics)?' Not an untrue question but rather one that's recognized by nostr's protocol insofar it offers the users the ability to be themselves who delimit the scopes of their experience of social media (ie, one open to any topic, or some others enclosed, such as how reddit does).
I don't think the intent is to completely step away from Bitcoin content?
When it comes to talking about Bitcoin, there are different contexts. I love reading about how a parent is incorporating Bitcoin into their kid's lives or if a farmer has their first Bitcoin customer at their local market. Those are great Bitcoin stories.
The Bitcoin content that sucks are people who are talking about the really useless stuff like dips, ath, the price, how much they stacked, how much they regret not stacking, etc etc. lame, boring, same-y stories that have happened and will continue to happen for the rest of time.
#grownostr is supposed to be for non bitcoin content. Not a lot of community enforcement with that though
ooo, storytime~
afaik, that hashtag was originally used for talking about growing stuff, like gardening and homesteading. It was started by a podcaster but I can't remember the name right now.
then it became a general hashtag for growing nostr as in branching out to non-bitcoin content. This made it pretty popular and with all popular hashtags, it got co-opted by bots and used so widely it isn't useful anymore.
yeap, that's the guy
