You don't have to sideload lol just use obtainium or f-droid. The full FOSS version is available.
iOS and windows... I mean, if you're still joyfully locking yourself into a proprietary walled garden, that's on you. Out here in freedomland its not an issue.
XMPP the protocol is somewhat dated and has some issues. But to this day it's the best messaging protocol available, ive tried them all.

Do you... not know what sideloading is? It's the process of DOWNLOADING Android applications OUTSIDE the Play Store, where did you think the fucking name came from?
Nope. Been at this quite a while lol. "Sideloading" is a term from iOS, and adapted to android, it generally means having to load applications in recovery or ADB. That's like calling installing an appimage outside your package manager "sideloading". Youre just installing software. Android isn't locked down like that (yet).
Only a matter of time, and then beyond architectural and (minimal) visual differences, there will be nothing to distinguish one from the other.

I just want an operating system that let's me operate my property as I see fit. Seems these days an "operating system" lets someone operate me instead. I'm not doing that, I'll throw this thing in the drink before I let some corpo put a chain around my neck.
Right now, android is that. Soon, rooted AOSP will be all there is. Soon after that we are all fucked, unless someone forks upstream and doesnt merge changes, something we should've done years ago.
Graphene and Lineage seem to making the best of a bad situation, but the former's workaround to Google's bullshit is something the other can't afford to do, which is the sole reason no fork of Android ever makes itself fully independent.
As it stands, everything is shit and all you can do is utilize the least shitty option of whatever it is you utilize; boycotts are fucking useless at the stage of societal, cultural, and governmental decay we find ourselves in.

was considering running my own for friends. i just barely got people on signal though, probably can't try to move them to my xmpp for at least a couple years lol
