It's healthy for Nostriches to continue to talk about our other interests, as part of me #grownostr personal series, I've talked about outdoor activities and beer. For today's chat, we'll talk about video games.

I found computer games in the mid-1900's and never looked back. I stopped playing console games immediately. Back in the 90's Quake and StarCraft were my original gaming obsessions. I still remember the IP address of my old Quake server 😆

Fast forward a few years and I spent a lot of time playing Team Fortress Classic and BF2.

And then, my fiance did something silly. She bought me a game she heard me mention a few times called World of Warcraft. I played that game a lot. I mean a lot. Way too much. The addiction was real. That game has so many mini-games to do inside it from farming materials, to gaming money in the auction house, to hardcore raiding, to achievements and so much more. From 2006 to 2018, I played WoW. I quit for a couple years at a time when my kids were born.

Eventually, I got back to my roots and started playing a first person shooter again in 2017. I became obsessed with Overwatch and played it non-stop for a few years in the evenings after the kids went to bed. I played in and organized several e-sports teams and leagues. This was a lot of fun. The past couple of years though, I didn't play as much as I was focusing my free time on other things such as Bitcoin.

I played Overwatch 2 for a couple months when it came out last fall, but stopped in December when I found my latest obsession, Nostr.

I went to BlizzCon in 2019. It was fun, definitely an experience. I would never go again though.

Some gamers will play dozens of titles, constantly switching back and forth. Not me. I find one I like, obsess with it, and strive to become the best damned player there is for that game. I'm really competitive 😆

I don't see myself getting back into gaming at this time. I like to talk about the fond memories I had over the years, but at this time, I'd father focus my free time on other aspects of my life.

Fortnite all night

My son played Fortnite a few years ago. I played with him a few times, but I hated that game. I did not like the building aspect at all. Him and I usually ended up playing Overwatch 😉

It’s a game that children love. I prefer the mythical saga ‘God Of War’. Now, ‘Ragnarok’..

Humm! You should try to play Mortal Kombat with him. Except for the excessive violence & adrenaline that this game provides... 😉

I was completely addicted to Quake II back in the day. These days the occasional (ok, almost nightly) game of Fortnite does it for me.

Wow really. A Quaker likes Fortnite. I can't get into it. I don't know why. I kind of hate it 😉

Some emphasis has been taken off building compared to the early days, which has made the experience more quake-like for me. I’m not much of a builder myself but still manage to win semi-regularly via other tactics.

nostr is the reason I barely turn on my gaming pc anymore lmao

OW2 when it came out was an... experience.

Been playing CS:GO, and Rust in my main rotation. Minecraft occasionally.

Nostr MC server?

HAH! Maybe us Nostriches should play OW2!

I played CS:GO a few times with some gamer buddies that played Overwatch and CS:GO, but I couldn't get back into it. I played the original CS back in the day. I still have the box the CD came in 😉

Would you consider going back to gaming it they streamed sats

Eh, maybe? I love gaming, but I get addicted easily. If I'm going to play an MMO, I want to play WoW. If I'm going to play a FPS, I want to play OW2. This game would have to be really, really good to pull me away from past addictions.

What dynamic are you thinking is the way for streaming sats to function?

On in-game sats, I think it has to have a game-based reason to make sense, and it has to be integral to the fun. Sats for bitcoin evangelism seems like not a reason to play a game, and wouldn’t it be somehow making the player the product?

I’m also a long time Blizzard fan. Spent a lot of time playing Warcraft 3 and the custom games. My friends and I played Heroes of the Storm for a good 6 years.

I am cautiously optimistic about Diablo 4

I never played HotS or any of the Diablo series, but I did play Diablo 4 back at BlizzCon. It was fun.

I need Blizzard to release their app for linux.

Guess Ill have to mess around with Vine.

that would be really nice

I remember when EverQuest came out in 1999, March. A few weeks after my oldest was born. Ex wife and I played with him on a boppy pillow nursing on her lap! Played for a year or so, very social game. Revisited a couple years later briefly…

Now, as a trucker, some days I have time to go play that original MMO. Some weeks have more sit around time, and am gone from home, so have been enjoying experiencing the 25 or so expansions they have put out in the last 24 years! No pressure now though, just play and do what I feel like… explore, do quests, no raiding and no pressure.

When at home though, I rarely turn on my laptop… have kids and a wife, #homesteading takes a lot of my time, at church or church activities when possible. Living in a small town and having 31 acres to try and manage is enough most days, and more than enough the rest of them days. LOL

Still, some #Everquest has been fun, and these days can play as a free account, just don’t have access to ALL the content. 90% could keep me busy for a long time though!

I never played EQ, but some of my old WoW buddies were EQ players.

Nice! I love them but not have not been a consistent player much for last few decades. Mostly I read about games nowadays. Sounds fun right? 🤨

Upside is I buy all my games and consoles on Ebay. Can’t wait for next gen Nintendo so I can finally upgrade from the Wii sytems 😬

Favorites? Anything on ColecoVision, NES franchises and Bionic Commando, Super Nintendo’s Mario Kart and F-Zero, the N64 Mario Kart and Goldeneye, and on the DS, Radiant Historia and Etrian Odyssey. Roast me.

Fond memories of playing Warcraft II on LAN parties at a friends house back in the day.

Ah, simpler times. Unleash the gryphon riders!

I was more of a StarCraft player. "Power Overwhelming".

SC was great for sure. I loved all races. I always went Random in matches, but if I had to choose, I would pick Protoss. I loved doing a 'goon rush.

I was a StarCraft guy myself.

But the REAL LAN parties involved CS 1.6

Just sayin

Yeah we graduated to Starcraft, but cut our teeth on WC2.

Still amazes me how playable that was over dialup.

We weren’t living the lux life, so only one line in the house. Nothing like getting booted off during an epic campaign.

Great post and life is best lived vs. simulated.

I have never played overwatch before. I’ll have to check it out. I have been playing Borderlands 2 as of late and I’m a big fan of the Fallout series and Persona

I still love Quake. Me and my buddies in the CRC Clan used to haul our computer towers to one of the computer labs at UBC that one of the guys was a system admin at so we could play on their T1 connection. A case of Jolt Cola and a couple of two for one pizzas and we’d be good till 3am. We used to have to carry our receipts for our computers with us so that security wouldn’t think we were boosting PC’s out the back door. We played quite a bit on Stanford.edu Quake servers against Evil Geniuses, Death Row and a couple other notable competitive clans. Got to help beta the early versions of CTF since Dave Kirsch (Zoid) played at the Internet cafes we frequented a bit. We got to do a four on four best of 3 against Death Row including Dennis Fong aka Thresh (first QuakeCon winner). Got rekt, but managed to get one frag on Thresh. To be fair it was mainly because he was fighting two other guys in a corridor and I got lucky during a warmup FFA. I wish I could reconnect with all the guys from CRC The CyberReich Clan again. Mike Ashley aka Fuhrer, Troy Dooley aka Rambo and Mark Leier aka Killa. I hope they are all Bitcoiners.

I played basically all RTS ever, expect for Command & Conquer. The Stronghold series is still my favourite, followed by Age of Empires/Mythology and the Battle for Middle-Earth games.

I swore off games for a quite a while. I find myself coming back to it, on mobile and Switch especially, to waste an hour with the kids. My Singing Monsters on mobile, is pretty amazing. We are a musical family, and the game has a composing component where you can write your own songs on actual musical staff that the game performs for you. It’s very innovative and appeals to me. It’s almost #homeschool credits worthy.. almost.

Age of Empires was my main game. I played the storyline, and actually watched the cut scenes which actually WERE homeschool credits, I don’t care what anybody says. There were no other 12 year olds going around talking about El Cid.

I used to play Quake 2 so much, that yeah, I still remember the IP, and all the console commands imaginable. We played daily for years, and at some point I was playing as captain for the Norwegian national team 😅. But slowly it died of, but me and a close friend still to this day, 25 years later still play a heads up once in a while on The Edge 😅✌️.

The next big game I played for several years was World of Warcraft, where I "wasted" maybe 500 days of playtime.

But, guess what? I ended up meeting my wife there, she used to heal me for years. She came to visit me from another country, and we got married few years later and have a child together ☺️. So, wasted time? Ended up reverse I like to think ☺️

Thats my "short" gaming story in my life 🥰💜

Dude, that story fucking rules 💜

That's awesome. I had several others guildies over the years that met in game and got married. Pretty cool. Back in the vanilla days, we even had an in-game wedding for them in Hyjal. a few of us glitched in and i summoned everyone there. good times 😆

When your life is destined with someone, no matter what instance they are, you will definitely meet. This is one of the stories 🥹🥹

That's what I like to think too. ☺️
