As part of my personal #grownostr series to talk about my interests, tonight's topic is beer for all of my #beerstr fans out there.

I'm kind of a beer snob. I will mostly only drink craft beer, beers that I've never heard of or had before. I don't like all of the basic domestic beer at all. I'm not a poor college student. I don't need to drink something that's cheap and tastes like water or something that's cheap and tastes like skunk piss.

I love to visit microbreweries with my friends and family. I love to go on microbrewery tours with friends and family, visiting multiples of them over the course of a day or a weekend. I love to get flights of different beers and really dig into the style and flavor. I probably spend a bit too much time trying to pinpoint all of the hops or ingredients 😆 Anyways, the beer is great, but also I love the social experience too. I love conversing with people, I love taking in the different atmospheres. It fits my personality well.

I don't like IPAs. I will drink them to try them, because I like to try all of the beers, but I haven't found one that I said to myself "Wow, I need to come back here and get this IPA for a second time." That just doesn't happen with IPAs for me.

I am a dark, dank beer fan. I love all styles of stouts, from coffee stouts, to milk stouts, to irish, to American, to bourbon barrel aged stouts. I'm also a fan of Belgian dubbles and Belgian tripels. My go to will always be a darker beer of varying styles, but this can change due to the season.

Oktoberfest is one of my most favorite times of year. I'm a real snob here. I won't stray too far from the traditional German style Marzen or Festbier. I've never been to Munich, but I've always wanted to go. I actually had my flight and hotel for the 2020 Oktoberfest, but COVID-19 took that away. Oh well. I've been to dozens of local events over the past few years though. I love to dress up for these events too.

During the summer on our boat, I drink a lot of sours and hefes. These styles of beers during the hot summer days work best. I don't want to drink a heavy dark beer in the hot summer, while on the water. I'll take a lighter beer here, but I still need something with flavor. I'm not going to drink Bud Light, Coors Light, Miller Lite, etc. Now, that doesn't mean that I haven't drank them while I'm on the water. I won't turn down a free beer from a fellow lake friend.

I've never brewed my own beer, but it's something that I've wanted to do for many, many years.

I look forward to having a beer with you at our next Nostr event :)

What is the best Whale you have drink?

I would Love to get some recommendations from a fellow Nostr beer snob 😂

Yes! Dark beers! Do you think it's an evolution of taste though? Meaning IPA beers are for a later stage of acquired taste?

i dunno. i signed up for Untappd in 2010 and haven't liked IPAs yet. i used to absolutely hate them and not drink them, ill drink them now, but i don't like them.

I enjoy a good milk stout. Sounds weird but they’re good. Cheers!🍻

milk stouts are my favorite style of stout 😉

i try to drink lagers now when they're available. having a kulshan brewing co. lager right now. if you like a dark beer but with lots of mischief, old rasputin imperial stout from north coast brewing is one of my fav

lagers are okay, but being from Pennsylvania, we kind of "grow up" drinking Yuengling lager. i like lagers, but i need a bit more of a change 😄

what are your thoughts on guiness?

Guinness is...good. I remember buying a case of Guinness in college whenever I was used to drinking Milwaukee's Best Ice 😆 I HATED GUINNESS! I was horrible compared to what I was drinking, but it was so damn expensive that my roommate and I forced ourselves to drink it. We did the same next year for St. Patrick's Day and by then end of that, we loved it. It was my go to stout anywhere I went for man years. As I've gotten older, I've found that there are a lot of other stouts that are much better. But I'll always drink a Guinness, no matter when or where I'm at.

I don’t think there are many beers out there that I don’t like. I definitely like lagers. However, my favorite homebrew right now is a brown ale called Caribou Slobber. Very tasty.

How about Shochu? A friend of mine makes Amami shochu on Amami Oshima. I think it is a good experience because Amami shochu can only be produced on Amami Oshima.

We prefer a good ol' puff, but do apreciate a nice craft beer on a warm Sunday afternoon. 🍻

puff? as in cigars or ?

🍃

Of the Jamaican variety only! 🤣

haha, i gotchu.

Hard ciders.

💜

Damn, your post made me all nostalgic about going to Oktoberfest! Haven't been in my home town Munich in five years 💔

Re: Sours, have you ever heard of Alvarado Street Brewing? They have many unique beers but their sours are pretty amazing. Every Friday they have a new release. Fun place to go too if you’re ever in NorCal. https://asb.beer

i haven't had any from them, but will add them to my list to try to find out here on the east coast, if possible.

I wasn't a huge fan of sours until I moved to Florida. Their brew scene is crazy. Marshmallow peeps beer anyone?

If you're a sour fan, and happen to vacation in Clearwater/St. Pete, I can't recommend Arkane Aleworks enough. They brought me over to the sour side.

If you're ever up north recommend lone up at Valdez Brewery.

🍻

I was a beer guy, tried the IPA thing, a couple I kinda liked, but never were my thing. I was a hefe guy in the summer and whiskey in the winter. If I had to drink domestic, I only drink it with tomato juice. But, I haven’t had a drink in over a year. No reason, just quit drinking and now I don’t want to start back because it’s been so long. I feel like I should get a pin or something.

I will try anything from a brewery, but I'm a diehard IPA fan. In other words, I've zapped my tastebuds.

I'd like to make a return to homebrew again. Brewing is a good excuse to relax and drink a beer.

i’m a big fan of belgians too. tripels and saisons are my jam. love sours as well. i don’t typically drink ipa’s either but a hazy on a hot summer day is 👌

Good to know your tastes. I’m brewing a beer that you’d hate tomorrow. 🤗

Brewing and sharing with friends and family is one of the more rewarding things I’ve done. It’d be worth your time, but is another long, dark rabbit hole. Best not to go alone.

Ever been up to Hill Farmstead in VT?

Back in my beer drinking days, I've made a few pilgrimages up to Stowe, VT for HF, Lawsons, Alchemist & Lost Nation

I have not. I've been to Stowe for skiing, but never for beer.

Zapped for promoting VT beers.

Just finished the last of my heady topper Saturday. Need to make another trip up there.

Miss those days. Enjoy a few for me 🍻

A couple of my personal favorites:

Left: Omnipollo Noa (Sweden) - Pecan mud Imperial Stout

Right: Põhjala Cowboy Breakfast (Estonia)- Bourbon aged Imperial

Do you enjoy Pabst Blue Ribbon, and if you do, do you drink it ironically or unironically?

100% agree with your IPA take. I want to like them, I keep trying them, but all I taste is straight hops.

Real ale fan here

My favorite will always be Hook Norton “ Old Hooky”

Meal in a glass

I’m doing Oktoberfest this year 🍻 my first and probably my last

I love doing new things and very rarely do anything like that twice.

There’s so much to see and do, so many nice conversations to be had over a new pint -

If I had to choose I’d be plumbed into a dark chocolate strong beer. I’ll go with the flow and get my kicks from the memories that come with sharing a brew with new friends and an upsampled glass or two of what the locals recommend.

If I liked you before, after this note I like it even more! The Oktoberfest event is one of the events that in the past I was always present, in the mountainous region of the city here in Rio de Janeiro - Petrópolis.

I also like to enjoy a good beer, but I’m not as sharp as you are! As well as, I like to enjoy a good whiskey! Thank you for sharing this with all of us. I really wish I could socialize with you, in a glass of beer - give you a Brazilian hug!

I don't know if I've ever had a Brazilian beer, but I look forward to having one someday 🥹

soon, you wont have to go far!

No! Let him come here... He’ll be welcome in Brazil!

yeah,

who isnt...

cheers from a guy they'll occasionally go for smooth wheat beer 🍻

We can probably find you one of those in Riga!

you joining nostr:nprofile1qqsf9jl9scw0c5snmkylpfhkppzgd7z7dupul6ms5yl52kfcz9jr8wqppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0pnt5a6 party on 8/21?

I'm waiting for my personalized influencer invite.

Yeah I want one too

I see it's at the basement bar. That place is great. So yes, I will be there!

📸time

Thank you for nailing invite Sarah... I'm handling the drinks. Will try to be there by 21 to open the tab.

I need photos for my new nostr food newsletter for zap.cooking :D

She wants us to get a photo with beers for my beer article 🥹

or celebrity sightings at nostr food events. Derek, you are the man

I have quite few food pics from all the traveling, will start prepping for your post.

A quick mockup idea for the front page:

🍻

A lot of people who drink cheap beer drink it because they can drink a case of them throughout the night and still drive home. lol.

Pyramid Sno Cap Ale made PNW winters cozy warm. In the nineties, Mirror Pond from Deschutes was a go to, anything Big John Harris brewed was money.

*scoffs in Miller Lite*

I’ve been to Munich, not missin much lol.. granted I was only there a day or two but eh. Huge beer fan myself. IPAs are my jam

If you ever get to Germany try to get a hold of some of these. Not sweet but super tasty.

What is your take on pale ales?

IPAs introduced me to craft beer just by their pure extravagance and contrast to Beer Inc. but by now I really prefer the more rounded nature of a malty pale ale.

(Similar to how peat/sherry monsters sparked my interest into single malts, while I now prefer high quality all-rounders)
