Why does my list of relays constantly change? I've paid for and added a bunch of custom relays, I get like 18 connections, but then come back the next day and its all undone, and I'm connected to like 4... and I have to MANUALLY put all the relays back in.

I gotta say, for something I custom configured that's incredibly frustrating, and moving the list and adding them manually is not a fun experience... especially having to do it over and over again.

Well, maybe your relays have a poor sense of commitment and aren't ready to settle down yet. Either that or they just don't like you very much. But seriously, it could be a technical issue, have you contacted Nostr's customer support about it? They might be able to help you out. Or maybe try giving your relays a pep talk, see if that doesn't help them stick around.

😭

Dude, I'm talking about the *list* in my client, not whether I'm connected or not. If I had all 20 or so that I added, and only 4 connected, that would make much more sense and I wouldn't asking what is going wrong.

But thanks for the not-even-relevant sarcasm anyway. 🤦🏻‍♂️

It's a spam bot 🙃. Block it.

On android try Nostros.

Has a push relay list button.

Sounds like a client/connectivity problem. Relays work 💯 on my Damus.

Maybe I didn't explain myself. It isn't about them being connected, its about having them in my list at all.

I have a list of relays and some are connected and some aren't. That's fine and I expect that. But after I've paid for a bunch of relays, and added them to my list, they shouldn't disappear from the list, whether I have a connection at any particular moment or not.

I got that. But your list of relays is AFAIK also stored on the relays, so when connectivity isn't good, those may not get properly stored.

Not sure how the whole thing is booted though, ie client needs at least one initial rely to read all relay entries.

Ah! That's an interesting thought I hadn't considered. 🤔

That's what it was!

I added 2 other relays that I recognized from the recommended list, and my list exploded from 7 to 35!

Thanks, I wasn't registering how that worked. I had assumed that my relay list was kept specifically in the client I was using. (ie. on Iris if I entered it, then as long as I logged back in on Iris, I would be delivered the relay list)

That's really interesting. I wonder how I can broadcast the list better to be sure that most of my relays have my whole list 🤔

The only time this happened to me is when I was using other clients like Current.Io or Snort

I think it’s client related as well

Seems to have happened to both Iris and Damus currently. Damus keeps defaulting back down to 4 relays after i spent a while yesterday adding like 16 or so.

Try only logging in with damus for awhile and see if it still happens. I can’t guarantee that you will have a consistent experience if you are using other clients.

One of the clients you're using is being naughty

Ok just wanted to confirm this is likely client side, thanks

If you are using amethyst, do not forget to POST your changes. Otherwise it wont upload its changes.

Second this.

I also found frustration with this issue though.

Switching which client I used seemed to be the culprit. Which should not happen, but what can you do? Build your client, I guess.

And how do i post it?

Dumb question but are you sure that you hit SAVE after adding relays? 🤷🏻‍♂️

lol yeah. Good to check, but I actually added and saved one at a time because the UI was acting up, so each one was confirmed before adding the next. Also on Iris I had 20 connections yesterday and have always had pretty good connectivity.

Just now when I came back up here (which made me post) I only had 5 in my list, with 3 connected. Then in the "recommended" section were a ton of the relays I spent time manually inputting, lol

As a workaround try this. https://metadata.nostr.com. It only supports the newer format however.

One challenge is we have an old standard for relay lists and a new one. Some apps are using old or accidentally delete the other data.

If you can try stick to a single app for a little while it should be ok after a while.

Using amethyst, iris, plebstr

No such issues

This happened to a lot of us early for some reason when trying out new clients …

Coracle erased half my followers & at some other point the exact same thing you describe happened to me.

If you need to recover followers, Nostrgram.co has a recover feature.

The relay ones … I just use few and we’ll established clients …
