a client with advertising would likely get minimal adoption compared to similar free ones. so while people might try, i’m guessing they’ll mostly be dead-ends

Not if the users are getting a cut of the ad revenue in sats

This too. My dream relay would distribute profits from spammers amongst well-behaved clients. It’s a win for all.

I’m not sure I understand what you mean by profits here?

You are just filled with refreshing ideas and takes on all of this. Thank you. 💪

interesting possibility - but i’d guess amounts would end up being too minor to matter compared to the hassle. good thing is at least it can be tried!

I don’t know how accurate this figure is but if true it would translate into a LOT of sats for users watching ads.

“Digital ad spend per person is expected to amount to $584.87 per internet user in 2022 [in the US].”

oh yeah, ads are big business today. i just wonder if the numbers will be as large once the control points change

You say that but more than half the world watches Youtube and listens to Spotify with ads.

Exactly. If the client is top notch, people don't mind seeing advertisements, if it's free. I wouldn't mind paying for a client and relays access. Not everyone feels this way. Plus, advertising isn't going to go away just because we don't like how Twitter or Facebook does it.

There’s also a difference between generic ads and specific ads that are actually relevant and useful for users.

Historically the only way to serve relevant ads has been to track and observe behaviours and interests at the expense of privacy.

Nostr may introduce clients and relays specific to interests and niches that relevant ads get served on, which would be a win for advertiser, client, relay and user… perhaps 🤔 #[1]

I agree with this

the free alternatives to YouTube lack a lot of the important content

Those ads pay for things like content moderation, anti spam systems etc. Many people do want these things. It should just be optional and alternatives should co-exist.

That’s true, and the client operators could accept ads in the same way that Bitcoin podcasters filter for Bitcoin sponsors

Right. For example: there's nothing stopping Astral to show a Foundation Passport hardware wallet ad in their side panel. Astral would just be sponsored by these Bitcoin companies. Ads don't have to be intrusive or cringe.

Or maybe you love a product so much you can contribute to the ad spend to help get the word out 😂
