Has anyone here setup a node using an external SSD drive on Linux/Ubuntu? For 😊 me reason I'm struggling with it. The "app" only wants to run core on the internal drive won't come up with the option of the external drive. I've formatted it, followed some terminal instructions, etc.... Who's got the info for me to conquer this quest?

set your datadir to a directory thats mounted to the external drive. this can be set through configuration file (bitcoin.conf) or whenever you start up bitcoind

I had to write some information to the (bitcoin.conf) file like rpcallow and rpcstrongpass and an ip (maybe 🤔 need to switch something there)

Okay, the suspense is killing me! What's "the app"??

bitcoin core from Ubuntu app center. Most instructionals I've found run things from Terminal though.

This is the way. It'll want to use sone directory on your root system by default; you need to make sure the directory its using actually lives on the external disk, either by mounting, or setting bitcoin core to look somewhere else than the default. Depends on your OS.

Linux.

Either way will work. In bitcoin.conf you can set the data-dir to /mnt/external or wherever you have your ssd mounted.

Here's a neat tool to help guide you:

I have Electrum Wallet setup with a mutisig for the family to learn with, you can run a node thru Electrum, too? Or are you saying the info I'm seeking may be here?

Thanks?

You can run a lightning node with electrum. Minimum sat requirement is a bit high i think it was 200k sats. So far from my experience it is the only wallet i fully trust with my sats.

Trying to run a bitcoin node for now, ⚡ takes the backseat for a bit.

Why not just mount the second drive and symlink it to wherever your Bitcoin Core data dir is. Don't forget to set auto mount on boot.

I did this with Umbrel and it worked fine besides borking with every update🤦‍♂️

I'm new to this, lol, I think I've made some progress....

As long as that is actually writing to the external drive Good job!

Umbrel and Start9 both provide nice GUIs and preconfigured apps but are full OSs.

It is, thankfully, I had a small set back yesterday with wifi failing and trying to get bitcoin going again..... finally back up this morning.

I couldn't have done it without Grok, honestly. Tried using Venice for some help, but the experience on Grok was light-years ahead.

Loving Linux/Ubuntu so far. 1 week in.
