Hopefully open source AI completely destroys IP

Why?

IP is the source of a huge number of modern problems. IP violates basic property rights & prevents the spread & application of new knowledge. I can't use my own energy & time & materials to build something if someone else built it first or had the money or political connections to buy monopoly privleges first. It prevents a lot of open development which would be more likely to lead to standardization across many different industries. And it rewards people who do nothing but aim to disrupt innovation & steal from innovative producers.

Patents are just monopoly rights granted on material recipes for an arbitrary amount of time. Patents don't last forever because "forever" would make the scam unsustainable. IP does not exist in the culinary world because monopolies on food recipies would likely cause people to starve, again making the scam unsustainable.

Property rights exist to reduce conflict over scarce & rivalrous things. Ideas or patterns for arranging materials are definitely not rivalrous, & are only ever marginally scarce. If nothing is missing, then nothing has been stolen. Precise, low cost communication & copying are advancements that should improve lives everywhere. People trying to stop communicaton & copying are trying to keep people from improving their own lives with their own stuff.

If I can take some pictures of your car & print one out for myself using my own machine & materials, have I stolen your car? Have I stolen a car from the original manufacturer? They haven't even lost a sale, because I would never buy a new car, but I am the sort of person who would build one.

not to mention IP stuff takes high powered lawyers to enforce which ultimately means big corporations like Apple can screw however they want.

I asking particularly about intellectual property, not patents. Patents exclusivity requires a state of sorts controlling the market. No debate there.

But what about intellectual property as secret? It can be held exclusively, while it remains a secret. Like a trade secret. If others figure it out, that's in their freedom to use it.

Secrets are yours as long as you can keep them. That is not what is generally meant by IP tho.

only gov change will do it

Nah, the market will make the laws obsolete & govts will change when their attempts to enforce the laws make them look foolish & powerless, to the point of threatening normi perceptions of legitimacy. Much like with marijuana laws. Widespread disobedience came long before anything changed.

i am all for disobedience, the question is by what means? unhooking from fiat seems a good one, but i feel violence will be inevitable

I mean, we've already had some. The govt was releasing real criminals, giving them money & bussing them into places to do real damage so that the middle class would be afraid & demand police protection. Those riots in 2020 with pallets of bricks placed everywhere weren't an accident.

This is bassically the same thing the Soviets did to their people. They arrested & always held any real political dissident or intelligent protester, but they regularly released thieves & violent criminals to terrorize the normies & make them clamour for more govt protection. If you regularly put people in danger you get to play the hero over & over again while you wear them down.

Hopefully the violence just won't be everywhere. It will mostly be in the places where they are trying to implement their policies the hardest & as the contrast between those places & others continues to grow people will hopefully continue to wake up.
