DONATIONS ARE NOT A BUSINESS MODEL.

MOST PROJECTS SHOULD ATTEMPT TO ETHICALLY MONETIZE TO BE SUSTAINABLY INDEPENDENT.

CERTAIN PROJECTS CANNOT BE MONETIZED. THEY HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO BE RELIANT ON DONATIONS. IT IS A HARD PATH BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE.

You cannot expect people to be giving all the time at good will. (Pun intended)

Just charge for a good product, not begging 🙏

HOW TO ETHICALLY MONETIZE IN AN UNETHICAL MONETARY ENVIRONMENT?

HOW TO ETHICALLY MONETIZE IN AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE EVERYONE IS INCENTIVIZED TO HODL INSTEAD OF SPENDING?

ASKING FOR A COUPLE OF FRIENDS

Say hello “non-profit” world. Donations are not a business model for [fill in the blank].

My least favorite is when a business provides a "suggested donations". Call things by their proper name please. Either it's a charge or you're a charity. Stop acting like a charity if you are no one.

True. I wish more FOSS projects would charge. Many would become better.

Yes, I agree. And also ask for Bitcoin/Lightning donations.

If the business is not for charity When receiving donations at the beginning in the medium and long term There should be income to support the business itself.

opensats is an example of a project that cannot be monetized :D

What happens if we find that there isn’t as much demand for information and “tech” as fiat has conjured over the last several decades. Instead physical assets and local communities (in person) are the real beneficiaries of a bitcoin.

Fiat tech is “profitable” with stupid high PE ratios and that is with the current advertising monetization model. If that goes away, what is the moat on tech, specifically application/clients? When information is inherently free, the value someone is willing to pay for that information is nothing. And the tech user experience is clearly worse (and worse for us) than the real world experience.

I don't think it's impossible

The way I see it, you either do what Facebook did and acquire debt, donations, or issue equity until the masses have been onboarded, or you issue a subscription from the gate and make adoption take added time.

I think that the monetization method in any scenario for the social media client should be subscriptions so that advertisements don't corrupt the information flows purity. It is a key diferentiating quality of nostr.

Seems like lazy thinking to me. I thought Nostr was the arena for innovation.

What do u suggest?

It seems reasonable that clients provide visibility for companies/services, so they could work out key features within the client apps that highlight those services and share revenue. Just one idea from a construction guy. Im sure I could think of more

Also, paying for subscription is basically an investment in that client. I would love to pay for the ability to highly customize my experience and possibly have a REAL voice in a small way about features that could feasibly be added to the client instead of the “take what you get” approach. Create some loyalty

🙌

Es duro pero se puede 👌👏👏

I donate to projects until they find a business model or I stop using them. I think it’s only natural to become sustainable or you die.

for sure

Another way of looking at ‘donations’ is a way of strengthening people’s ability to take responsibility for deciding value. An intuitive exchange based on what is offered and what is being taken. It takes a lot of accountability on both sides. I think it’s a healthy challenge.

Nostr/Bitcoin are still at the very very beginning of a long journey. One which will require those people with vision to sacrifice their time and creative energy.

To monetize too soon may be detrimental to the overall project if it reduces cooperation, which is still vital while the basic plumbing is still being developed.

No one should underestimate the scale of the endeavour, which is in essence to replace a financial system which was built over hundreds of years.

I think the ultimate lesson that the value-for-value model teaches us is that art can't be monetized. Years of predatory record deals, government sponsorships, and subsidies from venture capitalists have taught us to believe otherwise. However, I think this a net positive, revealing that bitcoin's incentives shatter illusions brought forth by Keynesian usury

art and top shelf cutting edge engineering both share this property and spring from the same well of chaos :D

leonardo had to take on some questionable contracts to be able to keep doing his research, nothing different for us now either

Very good point. The freedom tech space must be creative in attaining independence from tradfi. I may be alluding to tools and models that don't exist yet, some of which would use traffic as a stepping stone

there's really no solution for it, if you are a genius you can figure it out, i think that's the thing - or maybe someone else sees it and they figure out how to add something that it needed

leonardo's stuff got forgotten mostly because there was no practical way to implement the ideas, flying machines, for example... these needed teh internal combustion engine and that needed a whole swag of other things a way too long list of prerequisites

just like how satoshi's genius invention needed a heap of things others discovered before he came along, and then on top of it in his case, the technology is so disruptive that everything that works with it struggles to get over into economic viability

How are you defining “ethically monetizing”? What business models are ethical in this context?

FINANCIAL SOVEREIGNTY IS TRUE INDEPENDENCE

Monetize = laws and taxes in the worst regions like US and EU. And I think a lot of people in IT don’t have stomach for that. Anything around bitcoin and open-source will be criminalized by any nearby local institution 🤷🏻‍♂️
