I’m still a newbie when it comes to tech in the bitcoin world. What did you set up here for your self custodial wallet?!
This is a Raspberry Pi 4 that you can get for around $65 on Amazon. Then you install a barebones Linux OS on it and the free version of Alby Hub.
Check out refurb dell towers you can get WAY more processing power for not much more. I got mine for $75usd
But then your home power consumption is much higher. The pi4 has really low power needs.
I already run my own node on an Intel box. I’m setting this one up with a friend so he can use it as a standalone Alby Hub machine.

Yeah, and even if you upgraded your node to better hardware, you can still repurpose an old RasPi to run Alby Hub. You don’t even need a SSD. The entire thing can run off the microSD card.
Nice. Wasn’t aware of that. I thought you had to have the node and LND to run Alby hub.
Nope! That’s only an option if you already run a node. Check the docs, it’s designed to run on all kinds of cheap hardware.

I have one of these things collecting dust and I want to set this up for a local brewer who uses Aqua Wallet.
What OS did you use with the Raspi?
It’s really not in the grand scheme of things. the stability and speed is worth more to me.
So is this a Node and how do you create your own wallet.
That’s the Alby Hub part. Run the app locally and connect it to a NWC wallet like the Alby browser extension or Alby Go. You can also use it with Zeus, Damus, Primal, etc.

Run a Umbrel node then connect alby hub. If I can do it anyone can. After that grab yourself a Bitaxe bitcoin miner.
I never thought I’d be able to run a full node and a bitcoin miner without advance technical knowledge of computer software engineering and or programming skills. I’ve done, so can you, and so can anyone who desires to be free.

Alby Hub uses LDK on the back end. It’s a lightweight way to run Lightning without all the dependencies.

That’s right, we run a bitcoin node for LDK to fetch blockchain data. But you can also run fully without dependencies if you connect it to your own bitcoin core (by default Start9 and Umbrel run like this)
