So this is the math my boy is doing in grade 8. I have no idea how to help him with this because it’s all foreign to me. I’m fine with basic math, but this stuff is not my territory. Anyone know how to do this type of math?

Place the value in place for the letters then remember BEDMAS

• Brackets

• Exponents

• Division

• Multiplication

• Addition

• Subtraction

10 looks like this -3 x (-8-7)

-3 x -15=45

Negitive x a negative is a positive

SuperDan knows

The hardest year of school for me was grade 12 I decided to keep my options open & took no spares only core subjects. Even university wasn't as hard.

I barely passed high school, just barely 😅

I didn't find bitcoin till 21

I passed one class because the teacher did not want to deal with me again. She was the only one teaching that class.

My attendance was superb 🤭

What happens if there’s no brackets involved? Do you just advance to the next stage in BEDMAS?

Or do you always use each step, in BEDMAS?

Hope that makes sense lol

Correct #6

-4 -6 / 2

= -5

Wait -4 -6 /2

-2 -3 = -5

#2 would be -2+ -34=-36?

So #3 I think goes like this?

(-4)x(2-6)=16

Bang on!

My brain works better in the morning, with the help of a calculator of course lol.

But I am starting to see how it works.

#7 is -16?

Correct

This stuff is easier than I thought, after doing a few lol

Substitute -4 in for W. For #1 parenthesis first so -4 - 4 =-8. Then multiple by 6 so -48 then divide by 8 so -6. Or after doing the parenthesis the 8 on the top and bottom cancel giving -6.

Lol, I worked out the brackets, once I saw it was 8 and only being multiplied, I saw the perfect opportunity to simplify... Divide by 8, you cross off the eights on both top and bottom and are left with 6*(-1)/1... So -6.

#4 look like this?

-8-4=-12

For #4, -4 squared should be 16 - 4 is 12.

Right, 2 negatives is a positive. Thanks

I did -4 x 2, that why I got the answer I did. I didn’t square it

This looks like algebra I exercises in expanding and simplifying expressions. A good place to look for pretty clear help with things like this is https://www.khanacademy.org/.

You all are making this sound way too easy lol

Lol, oh good lord not Super Teacher Worksheets 😂

I'm purely here to make you feel less dumb. My kids bring this exact stuff home, takes me 60 mins to figure out what the f is going on 😂😂😂 you are not alone.

This stuff is not my thing, and I realized at a young age, likely when I was introduced to it in school, that I would never have a use for this type of math, so I never bothered to really learn it.

Never in my life have I needed to calculate math this way. Maybe I have unintentionally in my head without realizing it, but highly doubtful.

I like simple, and my boy is the exact same.

I need this kind of math explained to me like I’m really really dumb🤣 and I likely still won’t get it. Just wired different I guess🤷🏼‍♂️🧠

Substitute W with -4 and solve.

Same for the second part.

Give attention to the order of operations.
