And new bug
Meant to doc this earlier
Known issue and on my list this week
i'm missing a sync feature though, so that i see the same conversations from desktop and mobile ... but i guess that's difficult if there's no IDs ... hope it'll get there, because apart from that it's wonderful
This is precisely why solutions such as SimpleX or Keet are worse compared to Nostr DMs.
At the cost of security. Nostr DMs have no forward secrecy (same nsec/npubs used in each key exchange). Take that together with the fact that people tend to trust clients way too much with their nsec and you have a disaster on your hands should a client be malicious.
Developers comment:
"Proper profile sync is coming some day. It's not a very high priority as it is quite complex... Groups are coming sooner, and groups is another clutch that can serve as a workaround for missing profile sync for many users - you can have groups instead of 121 chats, just adding all devices of two people in the group - we use it for a long time already."
Yes that's how I use it for now as well. Thanks!
💯
Why not Nostr DMs? Give it a try after nostr:npub1gcxzte5zlkncx26j68ez60fzkvtkm9e0vrwdcvsjakxf9mu9qewqlfnj5z enables the metadata encryption.
its fun. i don’t have a lot of conversations on there yet.

如果加了群,新成員進來也都一直通知,有點煩
The most annoying thing about most chat programs is their being tied to a phone number. It always ends up biting one in the end.
How was the change? Pros & cons of the move?
Do you think the value proposition having no identity or not relying on phone numbers?
Would you still like it if it had stable identity that happens to be a publicKey like did:key or npub?
FWIW, I subjectively find the current SimpleX onboarding with the required user name field somewhat more intrusive than either clear cut phone number requirements or random IDs. I would much prefer a random PK.
I want no input requirements before accessing the main functionality in any app type. These days, if an app presents asks me anything before letting me see its main UI, I just discard it.
This also kept me off of most other Nostr clients, and firmly on Damus.
[What] do you think the value proposition [is], having no identity or not relying on phone numbers?

Provides one possible answer...
Using it too. The only problem is that most ppl here use WhatsApp. So not ideal (yet)
I have the same issue. I've decided, im not sure when, that im going to stop with Whatsapp and give everybody my alternative methods of communication like email, Simplex, Threema, Matrix via Element and hopefully a voip number. I havent been able to found a voip number without kyc.
Have you checked out 0xchat yet nostr:npub1sg6plzptd64u62a878hep2kev88swjh3tw00gjsfl8f237lmu63q0uf63m
Some people should volunteer and post short videos, tutorials on both apps!
Didn’t know this one. Thanks!
Is it better than xmpp? If yes, why?
XMPP leaks metadata and security varies depending on client support for various protocol extensions. Normies can't be trusted to configure it right.

What was wrong with signal?
Provided user list to unconstitutional secret government
Ok, I’ll try it out
Cool pitch why not also ditch the platform/servers? Checkout https://keet.io , it's DM+Vidcomm over lightweight non-global ledgers and swarm.
The ostensible reasons...

Wow, that article is load of bull.
I don't know, just reporting what i read...
"Many tools using DHT technology have no adequate protection against sybil attacks, therefore sender or recipient could be isolated from the network by an attacker."
https://secushare.org/comparison
"The state of XMPP security is a strong argument against decentralization in messengers, in my opinion."
No worries, it's just I spent some time reviewing the `hyper-protocol` sources, they use the same ratchet system as signal/telegram but in a p2p manner. A Sybil attack or network takeover can only prevent you from gaining connection to your known peer, whilst using a server is the very definition of having a man in the middle.
I'm sorry if I overreacted.
Oops, brainfart, i meant NOISE not ratchet.
Please don't shoot me.
No problem, i think debate about protocol design is constructive because no one has deployed anything that addresses all of the privacy, performance and stability issues that have been identified. Every messaging system represents some kind of compromise. But i do think Keet is very interesting, and appreciate the developers intent to create "the most unstoppable communication application".

Qualitative links, still enjoying the read, I admit the first one triggered me cause it highlighted all of the tradeoffs of keet and tradeins of simplex, obvious marketing.
But yes as you say, there are no solutions, only tradeoffs, and the rest is called design 🙂
More discussion of SimpleX here
Thanks for the reminder. I just installed it and will invite people there. Fed up with Signal turning to shit.
Does the iOS notifications work now or still with issues/caveats?
You can track the issue here:
https://github.com/simplex-chat/simplex-chat/issues/2032
“You need to choose notifications mode – instant or periodic push notifications, or periodic background refresh that does not use push notifications. To deliver the notifications to iOS devices we use our notification server, as there is a single private key that Apple issues for the app. For periodic notifications to work the app has to be in the background – if the app is completely stopped (removed from recent apps), it will not check the new messages and you will not receive notifications. Instant notifications work even when the app is completely stopped.”
Love it. Am trying to move people across too.
I did the same. Couldn't be happier.
Trying to get there myself 🤙
