Based on his replies so far, I don't think he necessarily understands what money is.
I didn't really "get" Bitcoin until I understood what money is and why our system is so broken.
Maybe send them a copy of broken money or some Austrian econ textbooks and then revisit the Bitcoin question.
I've definitely stopped talking to "no-cointers" about Bitcoin and I generally just point out flaws in our current monetary system.
Only when they ask if there is an alternative that's when I bring up Bitcoin.
I still lean on Cryptoeconomics for fundamental principles of bitcoin, money, and the state. To me, maximalist arguments do amount to a ponzi scheme and ignore basic understanding of economics.

Explain how - a vast, distributed network converting energy directly into a verifiable and scarce digital asset that you can obtain and hold indefinitely and trade for any other good (theoretically, like gold) - fits that definition.
