Android is a Linux based OS but trying to copy a PDF from Android to Linux via cable is rocket science. Why Google, whyyyyyy αƒš(`β—‰β—žΰ±ͺβ—Ÿβ—‰β€΅αƒš)

linux needs airdrop and better wifi p2p tech in general

Totally agree. I tried localsend as a workaround but (at least for me) it never worked

Works for me but kinda janky.

I tried with different devices and even though they would see each other sending files always failed. Miss snapdrop πŸ₯²

Have you tried…

https://localsend.org/

We talked about it in the thread 😊 I tried with different devices but it never worked for me

Aww, boo.

It will also always be slower than wifi direct

Or just tethering with USB. Even this is too complicated. You have to choose a mode?? Seriously? What is this, 95? πŸ˜‚

FWIW, I just tried between two machines: one running Arch (btw) and another running Ubuntu. It worked flawlessly and quickly.

When Localsend works, its like butter.

When Localsend device A does not discover and see device B on the same network and vice versa I am at a loss.

πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

For me devices discovered but sending files always failed 🫠

Another (beta) option I’ve tested is Tailscale’s Send Files feature.

For your own devices, natch.

This is ancient tech compared to p2p wifi which works even when you’re not on a network at all. Linux should just add the capability, not sure why it still does not have this.

I've never seen this implemented. Any examples I can check out?

pretty solid option [most] of the time

Use syncthing. Never have to worry about dumb stuff like that.

I do! Extensively tbh, it's my go to backup solution 🩷 syncthing is one of the best pieces of software I know. But that file was in a non-synced folder πŸ˜…

Yeah I could move it... Still not satisfied with the defaults

Linux and Android are so close but so far, and I get it... But dropping a copy of a pdf into another folder just makes it easy! πŸ˜…

I would like it so that I can just connect my phone to my steam deck and I can transfer stuff. End user comfort without thinking about syncthing etc (for the record, my steam deck runs syncthing too πŸ˜‚)

That would be pretty rad, but that's way above my pay grade. πŸ˜…

Syncthing is even better with #NixOS 😁 all my nixos devices are written down in config, so I don't even have to set up folders again when reinstalling. Keys, devices and folder IDs hardcoded and backed up. Install once, never repeat πŸ’œ this step significantly leveled up my syncthing use πŸ€™πŸ»

Syncthing is so damn good
