Sometimes you can read the article with the reading mode button of your browser, bypassing the paywall and other overlays.

Brave Browser… And if not Brave browser, why even bother with a “news” website in the first place since is majority propaganda 🤓
Yeah, Brave (or fork) actually works quite well for this...
In some cases RSS can help you ;)
That's because you haven't "bought" into their idiology. Get it? ;)
GDPR is website cancer.
I’ve been slowly clicking “hide all stories from…” in my Google News reader for a while every time I hit a paywall. You start to get links to some smaller sites, but eventually you quit hitting paywalls as much. Honestly a lot of the small sites are better anyway.
12 foot ladder and the old 10 foot pole website will go around that.
What really boggles my mind is that somehow they’ve duped people into paying for these sites…and still show ads. They’ve talked people into paying to be advertised to.
And the content is mostly shit anyways.
RSS helps a lot

If it doesn't load a readable article, leave
Alternate strategy,
1. Click link
2. Realize it's a news site before it's loaded
3. Panic and hit the back button
4. Put the phone down
5. Open a beer
6. Keep drinking while angry that I can't black list domains from search results.
7. Become upset about the old Internet that we lost
8. Smash my phone in a fit of rage because it's made by Google.
9. Order a new phone from Amazon with overnight delivery.
10. Sleep
11. Return to step 1 but start pissed that I gave Amazon and google more money.
I stopped reading the news: https://www.alibris.com/Stop-Reading-the-News-A-manifesto-for-a-happier-calmer-and-wiser-life-Rolf-Dobelli/book/45345154
Me 2 mostly. I check HN and get a newsletter with topics I like and occasional one goes to a news website.
You're absolutely right. I've cut back visiting news sites, including video, by 90% and just catch up weekly. That's been my solution.
DNS-based ad-blocking (eg PiHole) makes it a little better. Can't do anything about the cookie popups though 😟
