When Cypher goes into the Matrix alone to secretly meet agent Smith and prepare to betray the group, who plugged Cypher into the Matrix?
Did he plug himself in somehow? If so, could he unplug himself? Why can’t the others do that?

i've got turned off the whole thing since they went trans but it really seems like this one inconsistency in the story completely destroys its legitimacy

The trick is to set up large Rube Goldberg machine where the last ball falls on a pulley that ends up pulling the plug from his head.
He was deceiving the whole crew. Possible that Tank plugged him in to go do his thing somehow unaware of what he was doing. Nebuchadnezzar's Razor, the simplest answer 😉
Maybe you can send signals to the matrix and it can grant you permission to go negotiate with it, just like centralized social networks 🤷

It seems obvious to me that people need an operator outside the matrix because they typically need someone to think quickly and adapt the plan when things go South with agents
In other words, if your trip into the Matrix was guaranteed to be safe, you could be your own operator

When Neo wakes up and is showed around, Mouse says that Cypher is so skilled that he can “read The Matrix” by interpreting the cascading green code.
Neo interrupts him while he’s looking at the screens and he even shuts down something - the sequence let the user believe he’s chatting and is not plugged in
This makes sense. I can't except any plot holes in that movie. It's too good

I guess he was not in the matrix, but in another space, like the training program. He could "log in" and "logout" by the agents in that place, or by a third party. Another tip: how they logout Neo on the first time? Could be a similar mecanism of logout. We could create a lot of answers like that.
I like the idea that the Matrix stories follow The Terminator movies after the machines have won and it's a battle for humanities final survival. 🤔

He didn't need to be plugged from the back of his head, the guy can read matrix code in real time! He was abstracting the meeting in his head while in front of the scrolling green glyphs.
Was watching last night and thought the exact same thing…somebody had to unplug him…so why couldn’t they see who he was with or what he was doing…they can all read the code pretty much
This could’ve been a great thread to pull on in the 2nd movie. At the very least, it would have been interesting if there were 2 traitors in Morpheus’ crew.
None of them ever escaped the Matrix; that was the message that recurred many times.
