So installing nostr:nprofile1qqs9g69ua6m5ec6ukstnmnyewj7a4j0gjjn5hu75f7w23d64gczunmgpz4mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumt0wd68ytnsw43q4gnztg is not possible in next gen smartphones? 😮

We haven't been supporting Samsung devices to begin with. They intentionally perma-kill certain features and hardware functionality when you did unlock and install other OSes.

Do you expect Google to follow?

Seems they will have to for devices sold in the EU. I think it's safe to say that Google would lose a huge amount of Pixel sales if they was to do this all markets.

If they did I'm guessing it wouldn't just be new models, an update could block OEM unlocking.

We don't expect anything. A lot of it is just people misinterpreting the EU and we brung it up already here

https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/24601-eu-is-banning-bootloaders-unlock

I hope you are right.

But what can GrapheneOS do if Google decide to lock their phones for whatever reason (and this seems a nice opportunity to justify it)?

No alarmism, but given the way things are moving in Europe, it doesn't seem wrong to monitor the situation.

nostr:nevent1qvzqqqqqqypzq77777lz9hvwt86xqrsyf2jn588ewk5aclf8mavr80rhmduy5kq9qydhwumn8ghj7cmgwfhku6trd3jjuer5dahx7m3wvdhk6tcppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0qqsv2jfa8w3ynqj3tkc5jf44x48xl0d2tqzpvay8rhephw2ylxlqwecvfrgzv

It's exactly alarmism what I'm seeing here.

Spreading misinformation doesn't help, imo.

🫂

I also hate misinformation, but Samsung that locks the bootloader some days ago is a weird coincidence, and a fact.

Take it as something to monitor.

First, the law explicitly states that compliance with the law should not be used as an excuse to block loading of third party software.

Second, GrapheneOS team has been working on a first party manufacturer device running GrapheneOS which would not be affected by this law.

Google didn't announce anything yet, but it will follow Samsung for sure.

why?

Okay, maybe I was hasty, I don't have any certainties, but Google seems inclined to go along with Europe and I don't know how much they like grapheneos. So this would be a good opportunity.

Bye bye GrapheneOS 😓

C'è assoluto bisogno di un Nostr phone.

Glad to not live in the USSEU! 🙄😵

european soyuz

I was sleeping on buying a Pixel since 3 months and didn't know this change was coming. How crazy! If you love freedom, get a pixel now!

How can this be reverted? Chat control is total surveillance and locking the bootloader closes a loophole for the tech savvy.

All devices should have unlockable bootloaders. They don't block you from installing another OS on the new computer you bought, a phone should be no different.

yet, PCs are clearly next

Difference is, you're not running around with your computer in your pocket 24/7.

Poor arguement. How often a device is on your person or used shouldn't matter at all. You are not borrowing your phone from Samsung, you purchased it and it's your property. You should have the ability to do with it whatever you like.

Absolutely. 👍

Not yet … it’s coming

Haha indeed

'Block the installation of unauthorized software' - is this gonna fuck up zap store?

Its different one. The bootloader is before the system is loading.

Sounds Anti-semitic

Everything sounds anti-Semitic if we mauld hard enough

I don't care. I buy the latest model without Look and Go ahead. For every stupid law there is a workaround...

How's that working out for iPhone jailbreakers?

The playbook will be only EU(through Google) authorized apps will be allowed. That means no anonymous self custody Bitcoin Wallets.

Mine's locked... to an alternative OS

As of August 2025, manufacturers selling devices in the EU need to:

- Block the installation of unauthorized software

- Use Secure Boot (or similar) to verify firmware authenticity

- Ensure only signed and approved ROMs can run

The directive doesn’t name “bootloaders” specifically, but its demand for software authenticity basically makes bootloader unlocking—at least in its current form—a thing of the past.

Time to buy a stockpile of Pixels

What bout Huawei? I am wondering what thy will do since they are already Google service banned

time for Nostr Phone

Better security my arse, this is outrageous! 🤬

I'M NOT GONNA LET THEM DICTATE WHAT SOFTWARE I RUN ON MY PHONE!

This law applies to desktops and laptops as much as smartphones due to those having Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios, which many people frequently forget about. It does stop people installing another OS on their devices and there isn't really a bigger impact on smartphones than laptops and desktops. It's a typical misinformation news cycle. Other news paraphrase stories.

Do we foresee this impacting OEM unlocking on Pixels? I'm confused by your response

OK thanks for the correction

Tanks for the clarification.

> It does stop people installing another OS

You mean "doesn't stop people", right?

As stated elsewhere, a law lives on its interpretation, and every interpretation is instrumental. Probabably the article is alarmist and has a clickbait title, following a persomal instrumental interpretation as well, but the fact that Samsung locked its OS few days ago is a suspicious coincidence.

The queston is: is it possible that other manufacturers, Google included, use this law to arbitrary decide to lock the bootloafer? It's not a crazy scenario to me, given the absurd things they did in the past.

I think that in these cases, always paying attention to don't spread dangerous misinformation (here I don't see harm), is better to take in consideration the worst outcome. If "they" see that we are worried, they will be careful not to exaggerate; if we ignore the matter, they will do whatever suits them.

I defnitly would also rather be save than sorry. Do you have a link to said law? I did not find on a fast search.

Defnitly it is important to call out Samsung, when they do not allow bootloader unlock anymore. Agree with this.

My concern was only to spread information, that is not based on facts. Because no matter how grave a story is. Only when it is based on true facts, it could be relevant.

Note: I originally read this Italian article:

that seems more balanced and informed (and not an AI slop at all), but shared the xiaomitime.com one because it's in english; this later actually seems less detailed.

Discussion here https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44765939 suggests this story is misleading click bait.

This is crazy and will have a big impact on men personally. Should I buy as many pixels as possible before they all get locked!??
