One time at work I was helping on a delivery. We were running behind schedule so I said in Spanish “Estamos retrasados”.
My coworkers stopped and stared at me with shocked looks on their faces.
I wasn’t sure why until later when I realized that although I had meant to say we are late, the more common meaning of what I had said was “we are retarded.”
I was very embarrassed, and it haunts me to this day.

Tardy is fine. It’s a different word. As for retard, I think it depends to whom you are referring to. Wouldn’t refer to a physical or mentally handicapped person as a retard. It was the same when I was at school. We’d call each other spastics or flids. But I guess, etymologically these terms are not “politically correct” but that’s language for you and meanings can change depending on the context and company in which they’re used. Bastard is another word that has “evolved”.

Definitely a shared etymology and used within other words, as with so many words in the English language that have developed from previous words, especially those derived from ancient German (Old English) and French/Latin (Modern English). To me, tardy is a distinct word from retard/retarded when it comes to modern day usage/definition/meaning - slow (in action) rather than referring to a mental or physical disability. That all said, I think “retard” is evolving a new nuanced meaning here on #nostr 🤣
To retard something is to slow it down or make it less efficient/effective if I not mistaken. Sooooo my thoughts are if they're slow or inefficient you're good.
Tardy does mean late as far as I know as well. Also words are just words it's actions that are the real issue in my opinion. Take government for example they say all sorts of thing that have very little lasting effect (other than maybe getting voted in) it's their actions (wich often differ greatly from their words) that have real effects.

The euphemism treadmill is when a word gets captured by society using in a pejorative way, so progressives ban the word and force a new one that doesn’t roll off the tongue quite so easily. For example calling someone an African American doesn’t work as a pejorative.
Bit harsh for retard. I mean either go i will end your bloodline level or just stay civil and dont curse at all. Kind of like: if someone says 2+2=5 i can say “you’re right” and just carry on with my day. But if someone wants war, i (ideally) should be always prepared. So retard is a no in my book.
