When I started building my own PCs a decade ago, I went to my coworkers with this question and this is basically the exact answer I got. nostr:note1vlnpymnnq3fdh0rd6g0llkmc28qcm32gfmuzckyh0stkh6ddrmsqfc5j5h

Bitcoiners do the same when someone asks them about how Bitcoin works
when memes come true
PC Part Picker for the win
Pitiful
Nothing changed.
Can’t wait to explain this to my kids 😆
I was furious when I got to the part where the face covers the most interesting note of the day
It is kinda weird when people ask me stuff like this. I always respond with, what did you look up already?
The first PC I built like a decade ago is still running today.
That's awesome! Still have my second computer 16k, wish I had my first 4k.

it took me degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering, 140 IQ and 20 years of experience building PCs to realize that i will never do it better than Dell.
if some bimbo asked me for advice on how to build a PC i would point blank tell her to buy a Dell.
you have to be delusional to think you can process enough information to optimize a system to the extent Dell does when they literally have nothing else to do than sit in the lab and benchmark things.
yes you can always use higher end components than Dell does, but then you could save yourself the effort and just burn cash in the fireplace.
DIY is for Dunning Krugers, which is who Gamers Nexus caters to and why he always bashes Dell.
did you ever ask yourself why no Sys Admins ever build PCs for their customers ? whey they always just order Dells ?
every idiot thinks they know more than the pros do. as i said, took me 20 years to realize that i don't. better late than never ?
i still build my own PCs of course but i do so knowing i will spend more and get less than buying a Dell.
i do it because it helps me build a personal relationship with my computer.
anybody who thinks they're saving money with DIY is a fucking retard.
a computer you built yourself is like your Child.
a Dell is like a prostitute.
gets the job done but leaves your soul empty.
Why not an apple?
windows has better ecosystem.
Yea, along these lines, I probably would have been mining bitcoin back in the day on my laptop had I been a windows user. Heck, may have even been a cypherpunk. Alas the allure of apple had me nearly from the start. No regret though; I trust universal plan.
But my question was intended to be a leading one because I no longer am comfortable with that level of trust. Instead now prefer FOSS solutions, and similar arguments can be made for DIY hardware.
if you're a dopamine junkie like me DIY is rather irresistible. i also build speakers from time to time. in fact my website was originally supposed to be about DIY speaker building.
https://dissidentsound.discoursehosting.net/latest
but what i learned in building speakers was the same as what i learned in building computers - that most DIYers are completely delusional and believe that the outcome is a function of quality of parts used not level of knowledge used in design.
i had an idiot tell me that he can design a subwoofer as well as JBL ( basically a Dell equivalent to speakers ) because he has a shitty free program that simulates bass response. this would be like saying i can design a computer as well as Dell because i watch Gamers Nexus. but idiots actually believe this.
yes you can design a computer that works better than Dell does. but you will spend TWICE as much money on parts as Dell does, and then you will simply not count the cost of Windows as well as not count the cost of your own time to make it seem like you won in the end. you will also overlook minor problems in the final result that you would not have overlooked in a store bought PC / speaker.
this is a known psychological effect - we value things we have created higher than they really are worth. this is why DIY is a thing. it's not about sticking it to the man. it's about Dunning Kruger.
this is why i have really shifted from DIY to Analysis. instead of building flawed things i teach others how not to.
LOL
Thanks for sharing. I am minimalist/mobile by nature, so very rarely take the DIY route. But definitely appreciate good engineering and quality. That's what drew me to apple; especially the years under Jobs. But the world today seems to demand a lower trust model, especially at big corporate/government/mass media levels. But I cherish more local/individual levels of trust.
i have no respect for apple or tesla.
they focus on being impressive and completely ignore the actual needs of customers.
i am past that BS.
as for FOSS i can get on board with the open source but not with free part
there is no reason why anything should be free
that's communism bro
the ONE TIME payment of $100 or so for Windows is really not bad at all. that's like one tank of gas in a pickup truck, and it will serve you for 5 - 10 years.
if i'm spending thousands on hardware i may as well spend another $100 to $200 on windows than use some inferior OS because it's free ...
frankly it's so cheap i didn't even bother pirating it for my last build ... though pirating windows is certainly not hard if you are morally opposed to paying Microsoft ...
I agree, and am not opposed to a cost. Open source is what is most important to me. I view free more as freedom to modify and use as desired. I appreciate quality hardware that utilizes open source software.
yes i want a system where as many people contribute as possible.
apple is the opposite of that.
Cool story.
I had a couple failed Dell computers in a row, which is why I started building my own and they lasted way longer.
At an engineering division I used to run, we built our own computers too, and routinely replaced individual parts as needed.
Nobody should compete with Dell for the mass market but if someone wants custom specs and a longer lifetime, custom works well.
Dells aren't designed to last longer than warranty period, but depending on the class of the machine the warranty may be as long as 7 years ( on Servers ).
top DIY market motherboards and power supplies come with 12 year warranties now, but i like to replace computers every 5 years anyway and Dell does offer 5 year warranty on the class of machines i buy from them ( workstations ) and workstation warranty is next business day on-site. you don't lift a finger - the tech comes to you.
i actually feel oppressed by the fact that my 12 year old DIY PC still works, because i don't use it but i'm also too cheap to just throw it out.
only downsides to old machines failing is it's harder to get your data but you should back up your data anyway.
i once heard a saying " data that isn't backed up doesn't exist " and i agree with that. it's similar to " you only own what you can defend " and so on.
your personal time is better spent backing up your data than trying to build an indestructible computer.
Building your own computer used to be normal.
Same here!
