Coders of #Nostr. I am in my mid/late 40's and am considering learning to code. While I know this is do-able what would be my chances of landing a job at such an advanced age? I would also be starting this journey from scratch, with zero experience.

What would be the most beneficial languages to learn, how long would it take to become proficient and what qualifications should I try to aquire.

Any and all responses welcome. Thank you🙏🏻.

Before any of that, try it out to see if it's your thing. Just follow a tutorial to make a simple lottery game for example.

Do you want to learn yourself or go somewhere to be taught? There are coding academies that get you from zero to coder in ~3 months.

It's very doable if you have an aptitude for coding and logical problem solving.

I've just seen some of the 3 month course type things but was wondering if they're worth it🤔. I m quite analytically minded.

I would say so. I have a few friends who successfully switched careers through such coding academies.

Aaah, right, that sounds promising. Cheers.

They are lower odds than being young, just being real

I appreciate that and very much thought that would be the case. That would be the same for pretty much any profession though, I suppose.

I do agree with nostr:nprofile1qqsw9n8heusyq0el9f99tveg7r0rhcu9tznatuekxt764m78ymqu36cpz4mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuat50phjummwv5hszymhwden5te0wahhgtn4w3ux7tn0dejj7qg4waehxw309an8yetwwvh82arcduhx7mn99uuwx66a that the odds are lower than for younger people, but I also reckon that if you don't look for jobs but focus on doing gigs like developing websites, then there might be enough work to make a living

I'm in my early 40s 👋 I've never had a "job" as a programmer but it has been a hobby of mine for ages. I have only gotten serious about it during the last few years. I built minestr.app and nostr:nprofile1qqspvmlq75689xnttagp50dx97yc0czck27gca49ua3vj5z8j9yxt6cpz4mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduhsz9mhwden5te0wfjkccte9ec8y6tdv9kzumn9wshsz9mhwden5te0wfjkccte9ehx7um5wghxyctwvshsgkr3ft more recently.

If you can get yourself up to speed with the current trends and learn the popular languages in the fields you're interested in, I think you'd be in with a chance. But if you're starting from scratch, this could take you a year or more imo, and young people can learn faster that you and probably spend a lot more time doing it than you, so you're up against it. So I think it would be difficult to compete against them in a company recruitment situation.

In the nostr/bitcoin space I think rust, python, go and js are popular choices. I only use js though, and it's been enough for me. There's no problems specialising in one imo. If you can start contributing to a project it's a good idea. Or build something yourself and hope that it becomes popular. Or try and win some short time contracts. You might have to offer to do it for a low price to get it. These can be "ins" with potential employers online that notice your work. Or if you have any more local connections/contacts, that can also help. Both of these, however, have a lower chance of landing a job compared to applying for a position directly (assuming all else equal).

Good luck and feel free to ask any more questions you have! (I'm not an expert though 😊). If you're in a position where you have the time and money to spend, I'd say follow your heart and give it a try 💚

Thanks for the detailed reply my friend, some useful information in there🫡.

I'm not a coder, but I did think about it once. I was told the best place to start is frontend web development

Thanks for the info🫡.

I found

Freecodecamp.org

Helpful.

Ooooh, lovely, thanks. I'll check that out👍🏻.

I found freecodecamp good.

You can take a look at the courses on https://www.coursera.org/ most courses can be completed for free if you don't want the certificate.

Somebody else suggested freecodecamp, I've just downloaded it👍🏻.

Look who is the super coder now. Male sure you sit in a dark room and always wear a hoodie for maximum effect.

Baby steps😬.

Doable, but you'll get a low salary and will only have enough experience to be a well paid professional when already in your 60s... If that's a hobby, go for it. As a career change, it's high risk.

I'm not really fussed about the low salary tbh, it's just a new challenge that I'm seeking.

I think it depends on the kind of learner you are but I recommend Javascript if you are a visual learner since you have the ability to iterate quickly building a ui which gives you the early positive feedback you need when getting started.

go is the easiest language to learn structure and algorithms, and great for building web services like nostr relays and such

Thanks for the info, Ser🫡.

The name of the game for programming is push through when you do not understand, want to give up and think all hope is lost. That time will come but you must push through.

it is the pit of despair and the ashes from which you rise

i was so glad when i finally got to start doing serious work with programming and for me Go was the first language that i could really grab hold of

I'm a similar age to you & quit a programming job/career in my 20s

I had the Bach degree & the job but I left it to pursue something more suited to my skillset & abilities. I was a slow programmer & had a very fixed mindset at the time. With hindsight I could have pursued it, worked hard & succeeded, but my heart wasn't in it.

It's a very competitive industry that's constantly changing & evolving.

I've no regrets except the wasted University time & money.

So what did you pursue instead?

Software support & training initially & then I branched out into soft skills & sales training.

I'd like to too, let's do something together!

Me too, I'm ready to make something cool and I've got lots of dead-end ideas

We can smash together some vinegar+baking soda volcanos and act like we're hot shit
