Is there no good lightning wallet that's self custodial? I don't want go run my own lightning node!

#asknostr

Zeus is so slow, it's completely useless in real life, nobody waits 2 minutes with their phone standing while the wallet loads. It's also prone to crashes.

Misty breez performs OK, but it doesn't have a lightning address I can use, the minimum 100 sats doesn't work for nostr, and the fees are impossibly high. 40 sats fees on a 100 sats zap is crazy.

Everything else I found is custodial, and some even require KYC

Blitz is slow, and no address.

Npub.cash works but it's entirely custodial.

It's so frustrating

If you’re patient with new experimental stuff, try the Blitz Spark beta.

I think that may be what I'm looking for. Thank you!

I have a few comments on it (not sure if you're the developer or not). Please take it as constructive feedback, I'm not being negative for no reason, I want it to improve, because it seems like the best option I have seen so far.

1. The loading times need to improve, they are better than Zeus, but still too long in my opinion. It needs to be instant, like for example the amethyst app.

2. NWC is a must, having to switch to the app and wait for the invoice to be paid is painful to me

3. Google play for notifications is a no go for me. I care about privacy and will not give Google access to anything. Allow the use of use unified push providers, such as nfty

4. I prefer to use my devices without unnecessary animations; blitz doesn't seem to respect this setting

I’m not the developer, that’s nostr:npub1nhjnmg9kl6yvehemr9638nsyvtpjtt39r2ketlt7h77pd2y6dqqscnxfyh but you may have better luck just tagging nostr:npub1cm3rpgj7457yjuqnvdalxaauakqu0ndkpkyp5cldkyutpz4xszpsmk96wt directly.

You’re bringing up some particularly challenging topics, and they’re all related to how self custody and the Lightning network operate.

Lightning requires an always-on connection to stay in sync with the latest block and other nodes. This is a challenge because like yourself, not everyone wants to run a node. That leaves the task to others with the resources and technical skill to do this, and it’s why custodial wallets are so popular.

Now there’s another option with systems that use the Lightning network to transact but store balances in a different way. It’s more like self custody because you hold a seed phrase, but the funds are not on-chain on bitcoin, so you still have to accept some degree of trust that the entities maintaining the network are good actors.

Some of these newer types of hybrid wallets rely on notifications, because they’re used to communicate between the network and the wallet, allowing the wallet to be offline until the moment it needs to wake up and receive a payment. I know this is how Misty Breez does it, but not completely sure if Blitz is the same.

Keep the conversation going, it’s a good one and will hopefully help others, too.

alby hub and NWC are the two i use for this. i don't have to manage the server and its backups and uptime, but i can move funds onchain and into lightning and zap into my xapo account with very little time and very little cost.

alby has features to enable someone to provide access to a lightning wallet without them having to trust someone they don't know. this uncle jim functionality is the way forward, as i see it. one person with moderate skill at lightning/onchain bitcoin can now facilitate maybe as much as dozens of other people's lightning wallet use.

Uncle Jim on Alby Hub is a great tool for family and friends, and even nostr:npub1yzvxlwp7wawed5vgefwfmugvumtp8c8t0etk3g8sky4n0ndvyxesnxrf8q offers it to bootstrap wallets for new users, but I’m not sure how far this can scale, because it’s dependent on one point of failure.

doesn't have to scale much bigger than an immediate family and friends tho.

as the uncle jim gets more experienced the failure recovery will improve as well.

This is basically what I do now, but just for my immediate family. I’d rather show a friend how to run their own self custodial Alby Hub than ever manage their funds.

yeah, i'd probably go that way too. i have a lot of experience training people to use computers to do stuff also.

1. The loading time has improved significantly—from around 20 seconds in the old version to just 4 seconds with Blitz Spark. We’re excited about this performance boost and hope you notice the difference!

2. Supporting NWC in a self-custodial mobile environment is quite complex, with many potential edge cases. That said, we’re actively working on it and are committed to making it happen, even if it takes a bit more time.

3. That’s an interesting point. We haven’t come across that feedback before. While most of our current audience doesn’t seem to view Google services as a major concern, we understand your perspective and will explore support for alternative push notification services.

4. Thanks for pointing this out, we’ll look into it!

You’re discovering the pain that everyone goes through when trying to figure this out on their own. Everything you’re asking for makes sense for the user experience, but everything comes with a trade-off.

The closest thing to what you’re looking for is probably going to be one of the new Spark-based wallets, none of which are fully released yet. There’s other technology in development, but it hasn’t come out yet.

Try Phoenix wallet

Doesn’t work for zaps.

this didn't work out for me, but thanks for the suggestion đź’ś

Minibits wallet is what i use for nostr.

Lightning isn't currently possible to self custody

You can either let someone hold your sats, or pay people to help you run a node, which liars call "running your own node"

Lightning is a shitcoin, we need real cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin / doggie coin / Ethereum

Albygo works nicely

Alby Hub (https://albyhub.com)

You can self host it for free locally or in a VPS,, or pay for Alby Cloud hosting. No KYC.

Payments are fast, no fees outside of standard routing fees, no waiting when you want to pay. You can connect it to Alby Go for a simple wallet interface.

I tried downloading alby hub for desktop, but it wouldn't pass virus-check and all the browsers i tried just deleted the file..

Yeah, it’s an annoying issue on Windows that they mark all unsigned apps as unsafe. It’s on out TODO list. Thanks for letting me know

Phoenix?
