Jellyfin is love

Definitely yes.

How do you play content? Like what client hw/sw?

I installed Jellyfin player on my television. On the computer I can access Jellyfin via its web service. On the phone I have the app. I used it mostly to do refreshes of the library, not really to play anything

Check out Kodi with it's jellyfin addon. It adds all the eye candy & intuitive UX the big players have to the client experience, with a ton of customizability. If your computer is linux, it's an easy install. On a TV it needs a separate device...

Worth it if you have a large library though & enjoy cinema a lot.

Not worth it if you primarily value privacy (but it still has added value IMO).

🤝

What type of device is needed for the tv?

"A linux device" was my starting point. A pi 4b worked, but was slow navigating. A minimally beefier NUC does the trick and is ehat I use now. I used an old laptop for a friends setup, and helped set it up on a steamdeck for another friend.

Would Kodi work on one of those Android boxes made for tv? I’m guessing yes

I'd be surprised if it didn't

Started the new season of black.mirror and shut it off when i realized its malthusian programming of the masses.

Ah. Haven’t watched any of it yet

That first episode was terrible. Depressing. Deadly subscriptions. Second one was much better though

What is jellyfin

lol legit was googling

We need answers from based sources 👀

FOSS media library. For movies, tv shows, music

https://jellyfin.org/

I have a truenas server where I store all the media. And I have the Jellyfin service installed on it. And then I access it on the tv, computer, phone. Fuck Netflix basically

But you still have to 🏴‍☠️?

Do you use Linux? I really wanna transition from my windows computer but I’m pretty intimidated by the process.

Free open source media server and suite of multimedia apps that allow users ... share digital media files across networked devices

Per Google

Sounds advanced to install on my midcurve tv

You would just install the player on your tv. Or cast from another device to the tv

Casting...of course! That the Node pick for watching things? Last time I did anything was with torrents and vlc player, and it's been years

Jellyfin you mean? Yes. That’s my pick.

Yeah sorry that was bit unclear. Thanks

Just about to kick off season 7 - I hope it’s good.

Gonna try it tonight! Enjoy

Same. Literally just hit play now…

Enjoy too!

Thanks!

A Jellyfin system awesome, but takes a bit of setup. If you want easy try https://www.stremio.com it lets you cast streamed torrents straight from your phone, on Android at least. It works on desktop too, but I'm not sure about casting. Instead the torrentio plugin and you're set 🤙

It took me a while longer than it should have to realize what a tech whiz you are, because of the pfp lol

Ryan is a wizard! A relay wizard

(Both of you for that matter)

Node knows what's up 💯

I like people to think I'm retarded, and then be surprised when I'm not.

Same here. But slowly realizing I may just be retarded

This episode was so good 😂

One of the best. His dis track for Dee at the end of so good 🤣

But you have to be logged in to Netflix, Hulu, etc right?

Fuck no, I don't use that shit 😂

It streams torrents ☠️👍

How did this not get shut down??

Pirates are wizards

Information wants to be free

Yessir

Torrents are unstoppable 💪☠️

Music to my ears

It's the risk of screwing up my nice expensive computer(s) with malware that made me stop (that and streaming is pretty decent).

My nice expensive computers are just fine 🫡

You sure? Doesn't it make you just a little worried?

Maybe it's just limewire ptsd I should forget, because that one definitely rekt me

That my computers are fine. Yes. I just download movies, tv shows and music

Limewire was goated. Worth giving my old laptop aids.

Yeah def got my money's worth. Node seems blissfully unconcerned about digital aids though, so maybe times are better

Never had a virus on my Macs. Truenas is on Linux

Get a machine on Linux. What's a virus?

😂🤝

Have one. Hardly use it cuz I can never get comfortable with Linux, not even a little bit. It's my node now lol

Maybe I could put it to better use..

Use it for tormenting

And maybe only open what you torrent in VLC, it seems pretty resistant to hacking

I assume you meant "torrenting" lol.

Have a lot of options to consider. Thanks

I did mean torrenting

Do not torment the machine, it will get vengeful

Seriously though, I've had friends running stremio on Windows for years. It's what I do so they *stop* fucking up their machines with other scammy shit 😂

How?

Viruses target mostly windows operating systems

I meant how do I get a machine on Linux lol

Choose a distribution. Download the installer. Sd card or usb key is pretty easy. Boot from the removable storage. Install.

>win

Distribution? Explain it to me like I’m Stacey

A distribution is like a flavour of Linux. Choose something easy like Ubuntu (chocolate flavour)

Will this necessarily wipe my windows? If it doesn’t I think I might need a bigger SSD

If you install on same partition yes.

Definitely have a backup of your windows setup before installing anything

Download Linux, install, profit.

I'm biased though, I've been Linux only for personal computing for like 20 years, so it's pretty easy for me. But it's not hard, chatgpt can walk anyone through it. Ubuntu is easy mode. Just try on an old desktop, that's the best way.

Which Linux should I go with?

Ubuntu is a simple option and has lots of help available. Any question will be easily answered by any AI helper too, which is pretty handy. It's where I started in 2005 👍

https://www.linux.digibeatrix.com/en/archives/1201

My desktop is dying. Built it in like 2017 to play games. It hasn’t been able to run them well for years so I turned down the graphics settings. Now I’m at the point where even that isn’t helping. It’s not a complete potato but we’re getting close smh.

⚠️If you have any important files, back them up to a USB first before you do anything ⚠️

A refresh of Windows could help that too.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/reset-your-pc-0ef73740-b927-549b-b7c9-e6f2b48d275e

If you want to try Linux it might give better performance. I still use a 2014 MacBook Air running Linux for editing photos and it's fine.

With Ubuntu you can test it on the usb too, without installing. It won't be as fast as an install, but you can get an idea of what your getting yourself into.

+1

+1 not that hard to diy/*****

Yeah, Linux is way easier now than when I started. On a new install it usually just works these days.

doing pretty good here on main dailydriver/ya cool Ryan

Me too Rand. Linux only.

Ryan, do *U* know the path of nostr DMs?

r they the same as any relay?

I know you're right, and that I'm lazy. BUT, anytime I wanna install something I have to go googling like a newborn. Then have to rely on obscure forum posts to install some godforsaken dependency I don't understand, nor have any clue where it's all located.

At least that's my spoiled experience. I'll try to be better someday

It's a bit different way of thinking Linux vs Windows. If you're trying to install things outside of what's part of Ubuntu, that can be a problem. If you use the tools included in the distro usually it goes smooth. Sticking to the app store is generally easy, it has all the dependencies accounted for. Anything outside of that is where it gets tricky.

I will say even as someone who has used it for 2 decades I'm amazed at how much easier AI assistants make it. Even command line stuff becomes trivial.

I wanna thank you again for stooping down to my level and explaining. It really is helpful. Going in the old memory bank. Will dust off the Linux node soon and reconsider

It's worth it. In my mind Linux, Bitcoin, and Nostr go hand in hand. Freedom software.

What about graphene? 👀

Yus

Pixel phone with quality (official preferred charger) and installing Graphene is a few clicks.

Android actually uses the Linux kernel as it's base. And there is work towards being able to run full Linux desktops on your grapheneOS phone. Soon™

nostr:nevent1qqspqkgny736z4g8s4rynj035ueqmvsjvchnakdjcc47yzehe85lukgpz3mhxw309ucnydewxqhrqt338g6rsd3e9upzph4t08d058ptuj62d5av5y6hkm92pd6yhar26556ttjxg2y908ngqvzqqqqqqy2u7whx

Node said people have issues with the camera. Others I’ve talked to gave up on graphene and went to back to stock.

Not quite true, they should have done more research. While the stock camera software isn't as good, it easy to install the Google one, there an easy options in the grapheneOS app store to enable Google tools. Literally the only feature my grapheneOS pixel lacks compared to my stock pixel is tap to pay, but I get improved security and privacy in return.

I never use tap to pay on my iPhone anyway lol but the Google camera is bad for privacy no?

GrapheneOS puts Google apps in a sandbox so they don't have access to most the information they do on stock Android. Combined with putting it on a seperate user, it severely cuts back on the amount of information it can access.

Privacy and security exist on a spectrum, nothing is absolute. GrapheneOS gives me 99% of the functions of my phone, while greatly enhancing privacy and security. If I were more paranoid I wouldn't enable the Google tools, and have less function, but maybe more privacy. Everything in life is figuring out what trade-offs you want to make to get what you want.

I heard about the sandbox thing but I don’t understand what that means. How is that different from users? Does it really matter if it’s the same IP?

I'd do some basic research about what sandboxing is, it's more an internal software thing. Think about how other apps on your iPhone can't access the keys in a Bitcoin wallet. Apps have separation, different users have separation. A sandbox is just another layer of separation.

It means that Google apps don't have access to the information from other apps on GrapheneOS, on a stock pixel they have total access. You can't track and leak what you don't have access to.

IP address are something different. That's what a VPN is for. But even if they did know my IP, there's far less data to leak. Your phone company (and the govt) has access to all that info anyways, including your location, and a bunch of other information just by you having a phone.

Security and privacy are a spectrum, not an absolute. With GrapheneOS you have more choices of what to share or not. On stock Android or iOS you have fewer choices.

Is this different from the iPhone setting to block tracking across apps?

I couldn't tell you, I don't use iPhones.

A good setup for Jellyfin is easy on Umbrel. Stremio is open source, and has a long history. Either is a safe way to torrent video.

It's even easy to host your own torrent indexer these days ☠️👍

https://github.com/bitmagnet-io/bitmagnet

It's open source, and all the torrent stuff is seperate community add-ons. I've been using it for close to 5 years, it's pretty solid. It's rare to find something I can't stream with it.

It's pretty damn illegal though, depending on the content.

IDGAF about that.

Stealing is illegal too unless it’s for roads

(asking the questions I'm too afraid to ask)

There's even a Jellyfin client for hacked Switches 👍
