So, what does nostr need?
#asknostr
A wide variety of content.
I don't think so myself.
We could have all the content categories, and people will still be in their own small grps/ circles.
What content doesn't nostr have yet?
We essentially only have Bitcoin and Nostr content and then content adjacent to those two. It's mostly "Yay Nostr" or "Yay Bitcoin". This will be fixed soon.
🤔
Maybe it feels that way, because that's how most of us have curated our feeds to be?
Lots of non bitcoin or nostr stuff everywhere in global...
I keep saying this.
Lightning bingo
Onboard the sweet old grandmothers.
Everything is downstream of sweet old grandmothers.
If we get the user experience right, it could work, anything could work.
Kidstr Client. Keeping kids away from legacy „social“ media.
We need a grp of 9-17yr olds we can ask what they envision a new social media being...
🤔
There are actually a couple of academic studies that did exactly this.
One of them, done with dutch school children up to 12 years old mentioned their biggest problem was comming into contact with inappropriate people and content.
this is something that people are working on nostr:npub1t6jxfqz9hv0lygn9thwndekuahwyxkgvycyscjrtauuw73gd5k7sqvksrw nostr:npub17plqkxhsv66g8quxxc9p5t9mxazzn20m426exqnl8lxnh5a4cdns7jezx0 nostr:npub1qe3e5wrvnsgpggtkytxteaqfprz0rgxr8c3l34kk3a9t7e2l3acslezefe
Thanks for informing people nostr:nprofile1qqsr7acdvhf6we9fch94qwhpy0nza36e3tgrtkpku25ppuu80f69kfqppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0qy0hwumn8ghj7mn0wd68yttjv4kxz7fwv3jhyettwfhhxuewd4jj7qg3waehxw309ahx7um5wgh8w6twv5hsleq7kw 💜🫂
We have been working on exactly this for the last few months!
This exciting news
It's the most important mission imo
I don't feel safe having my kids around when I am on nostr because while there are some filters, it's definitely not kid friendly
Totally agree
Do your kids get phonetime? If yes what can they access on that phone?
Ipad in the family room. No web surfing. Any games require chat turned off. The worst thing I ever did was download youtube kids. They just treat them as mini TVs and we had to limit the app so they actually played some of their favourite games. Kids are 9 & 6
1-2 hrs a day it I am being honest with myself.
Thinking after typing:
If you are setting individual limits in app, this has gave me the thought of only showing X min of video a day then they disappear from the feed
It's a fine line for me. I have a 5yr old.
Phone, tablet, laptop.
We do no screen days 3days a week. We only do 3 because I also don't want to hold him back from using tech to his advantage later on and not be able to use it as his peers can.
As to what he's watching, I use YouTube kids, but I have strict limitations set so only channels I approve can be watched.
Are filters set by relais or by the client? Or both?
exciting 🤩
Definitely more variety of content from actual users not just reposts of obtained outside media.
decentralised minds, though what happens then?
Users ?
Ok, I’m out 😂
Like nostr:nprofile1qqsr7acdvhf6we9fch94qwhpy0nza36e3tgrtkpku25ppuu80f69kfqppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0qy0hwumn8ghj7mn0wd68yttjv4kxz7fwv3jhyettwfhhxuewd4jj7qg3waehxw309ahx7um5wgh8w6twv5hsleq7kw said, we need more non-nostr/bitcoin content and engagement.
Most engagement is with those subjects, and it's frustrating that content outside of those doesn't receive much.
But I'm trying, posting to #baseball and #travel, amongst other things
Nostr doesn't have any big normie influencers that stick with nostr, bringing the other content from new users with them.
Even nostr:nprofile1qqsrpl96thl42ve0gsah63ypz75uunzpgfrd0g2x8nry4ggtef6crdgpzdmhxue69uhhqatjwpkx2urpvuhx2ue0qythwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnswf5k6ctv9ehx2ap0qy08wumn8ghj7mn0wd68ytnd09hhwmnyv9kkumn0v3jjucm0d5hsgkzgnt dipped out...
Legacy socials are paying them to well.
We arent their target demographic.
Sooner or later a big influencer or celeb should find their way here, and hopefully it starts a chain reaction
we have a big celeb now. nostr:npub15g32vct8xh0ca2eelp5al6y889cgrjgng4nyfg8vh2g9yny8ltzqgafsvp joined recently and started streaming :P
I’m kind of a big deal too (in my shed)
Woah 😯
Woah, I wouldn’t call myself a big celebrity haha. I’m just doing what I love, and luckily some people enjoy it on Twitch. 😁
My friend nostr:nprofile1qqsr8mahl8gltdm6arw6wtyr68ca2e5asyqlgyqdzpe9uxnjm48dkegprdmhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuenpwfekxctsd9skutnrdakj7qg4waehxw309aex2mrp0yhxummnw3ezucn89uwupce5 orange-pilled me about four years ago. I was always interested in Bitcoin but hesitant to take the first step since I didn’t know which sources to trust, as there’s a lot of noise and garbage from shitcoin content creators out there. Since then, I’ve probably spent over 5,000 hours diving down this rabbit hole. It’s easily one of the best things that’s ever happened to me; it completely changed how I think and live.
E girls, algos, and a face melting bullrun. Lol
I feel like I'm still forgetting at least one, but here's a few points
¶
We need a JavaScript-free self-hostable publicly-accessible Onion service frontend. I'm pretty sure Snowden basically suggested it should be top priority. I guess it would pretty much be like njump but with posting.
¶
We need to fix Tor on Android and get Tor Browser and Amethyst back on F-droid. Vitor has talked about this, kinda. Speaking of Amethyst, we also need Monero and doggie coin community devs to help add Monero and doge address links to Amethyst.
¶
All nostr clients should add P2P data integrity verification over Tor ASAP - when you interact with someone's post while they're online, your clients could automatically audit your relays by talking directly to each other client-to-client over Tor to cross-reference each other's local databases.
¶
We need a decentralized GitHub alternative. A lot of work has been done on this already, but I've also gotten tired of waiting while GitHub keeps showing up everywhere, so I've proposed a nostr fork of Radicle which someone has announced they're working on developing now.nostr:naddr1qvzqqqr4gupzqamkcvk5k8g730e2j6atadp6mxk7z4aaxc7cnwrlkclx79z4tzygqq78g6r994nkjargw43z6cm4wfjj6unpv35kxmr994cryupdw3hhyttwdaehgu3dd4hkuetjdukhqun0dfjkxapd0fuk6mm8v4hq88ufmt
¶
We need something like the old nostr:npub12vkcxr0luzwp8e673v29eqjhrr7p9vqq8asav85swaepclllj09sylpugg "my tribe" feed to come back and be more well-known this time. A feed that shows posts from all followers could bring higher profile people to nostr. It would be a big selling point for some celebrities to be able to say to their fans "come with me to nostr because I can actually fucking hear you there and you can tell I'm not one of those sellout artists that care about Elon or Zuck's opinion more than yours"
¶
We need to figure out if there's any good way to do "marketing." Nostr is competition to the big online advertisers. They seem far too treacherous for us to do business with. I've heard the devil will sell freedom for the right price, but nobody's smart enough to ask nicely. I'm scared to guess whether that applies here. But billboards didn't work out, and apparently a lot of them ban QR codes or something? The coolest place to advertise nostr would be a completely uncensored forum on Tor or something, but would that even be safe, or would the authorities criminalize the people making the payments for those ads? I've printed out little QR code cards to give people when I want to tell them about nostr, but that might just be a waste of paper, and deforestation seems like a higher-priority problem than social media.
¶
We need nostr-based retailers who aren't Nazis or friendly with the existing "nostr cult." One of them should sell all-natural paint and pure metal laser-cut stencils, to solve the marketing issue I mentioned above. Actually, I should just get a laser cutter and a good paint recipe. Be the change you want to see.
¶
In addition to people who are willing to sell stuff the old fashioned way, we also need better apps for selling/buying stuff on nostr, if we want to attract retailers and customers that just want to do business without talking to anyone, as the internet has made many people accustomed to. Maybe we don't want that? I don't know.
¶
We need to improve NIP-13 PoW support across the board to improve spam filter accuracy. People do not like inaccurate spam filters where a lot of bot posts get through and a lot of human posts don't. (This has made good progress lately I think, maybe)
I think it also might be good to have a PoW "ticket" relay where an npub just generates sufficient PoW for 1 nevent and they're whitelisted for a certain number of additional nevents to be published from that npub within a certain timeframe, or maybe from that npub+network address combined.
¶
We need more BitTorrent integration. I think the ideal is basically: nostr for indexing and storing small chunks of text, BitTorrent for storing and transferring big data.
¶
We need a human-tag web-of-trust, where you can add a binary tag to any npub that means you've confirmed for a fact that npub is not a bot, and you can filter your feed to only show posts by your tagged humans, or those tagged human by your tagged humans, or those tagged human by those tagged human by...
Caveat: we should probably avoid having a watered down "seems human but no proof" tag, due to possible psychological impact.
¶
We need every Wikipedia topic, but in a better wiki.
¶
We need systemic key backups / key rotation, not this paradigm of waiting until compromised and then trying to deal with it entirely by hand.
¶
We need a blockchain-based DNS alternative that's actually good. I've posted a pretty good outline of a design for this, we would just need to decide collectively on formatting details and make sure to consider key rotation before finalizing an actual design. There are also so many options that already exist, it seems hard to get momentum, but I haven't found any existing specs that seem really good.nostr:naddr1qvzqqqr4gupzqamkcvk5k8g730e2j6atadp6mxk7z4aaxc7cnwrlkclx79z4tzygqqrxuethg389xlyr95x
¶
We need more reliable instances and backup instances of nostr services. One that I've struggled with finding reliable instances of is w3.do the nostr-native DNS URL shortener
¶
We need more ways to post without JavaScript, like maybe some kind of doggie coin version of the Bitcoin OP_RETURN_Botnostr:npub1049yaplj3c8rtqw542frf9xlkka59z4a4ssdk72kpc4aajznhw5q8ra7md
¶
We need a new nevent format which doesn't use JavaScript or any English-centric code (making it geographically neutral), and which is designed with P2P communication in mind, ASAP. I try to plan this out sometimes but I haven't really done much work on it yet. The default medium of communication for this P2P protocol branch should be Tor, but other mediums like 2-way radio also need to be considered in the specs. It gets complicated fast. Still better than JavaScript
¶
We need to remain open to new information and stuff, not end up like Blocksky.
¶
We need Digit giving us stock tips. We wouldn't follow the stock tips, because we're busy holding our coins and posting on nostr, but at least we would finally have a topic to discuss other than nostr and our coins.
If Blossom really serves a technological purpose, as a faster big-data host than BitTorrent - then it needs a better funding model.
Content contributors shouldn't be expected to pay for a chance to enter in the internet's attention contest. I don't think nostr will ever beat giants like YouTube that way.
If we need something more expensive than BitTorrent, then we can use advertisers to fund it, like YouTube does.
If we don't want to use ads, the other option I see is tip-based funding. Content creators and nostr apps could encourage users to tip the blossom servers they use.
A new nostr feature could automatically pool tips and split them according to agreed/standardized percentages, between the creator of a file, the poster you're seeing it from, and the blossom server you're loading it from.
¶
We need something like wavlake but with BitTorrent and maybe soulseek/Blossom integration, no centralized backend.
¶
Blossom needs BitTorrent integration. In addition to [server]/[file-hash].[extension] we need a format like [subdomain].[server]/[file-hash].[extension] that shows the file's info, including an infohash for downloading the file over BitTorrent.
¶
We need something like plebs.app that works properly and is inviting for new users, not just nostr veterans. That will also need BitTorrent integration.
¶
Aside from OP_RETURN bots etc, it would be cool to have nostr relay servers that can be directly reached in more different ways (like OP_RETURN)
Quality clients. Users.
But these go hand in hand.
