Starting the day with a banger 🔥

GM & PV, sir!

Nostr is everything Twitter wishes it could be.

I like, I heard dis somewhere else be4

here's a question that motivates me: what does our education system look like on a bitcoin standard?

Hmm...you might need to specify the question a bit more.

Do you mean value? There's one set of questions around value: monetary value is one-dimensional, pretty much by definition (i.e. when we pay a monetary sum, it represents our best projection onto one-dimension of the multiple dimensions of the thing we are buying - though we invariably value these imperfectly). How would this work for education, I wonder? Very difficult to assess & collapse those multiple dimensions.

Do you mean long-time repositories of knowledge? How we preserve knowledge over time and prevent corruption (accidental or deliberate) is something that Arweave ethusiasts can comment on.

Or do you mean consensus? There's another set of questions here, but these are even trickier because we struggle to reach consensus as to what constitutes historical truth, or what values & subjects we should teach. These are the domain of messy, human politics, and I don't think blockchain offers tremendous insights here, TBH.

IMO, if you want some Nostr & BTC related topics, it would be better to teach your students about (i) the history of debasement of fiat currency & inflation; (ii) the idea of separation of money & State; (iii) media / institutional capture and the importance of free speech.

great questions that get at the heart of the issue. i'm interested in all of them. especially interesting for the age range i'll be teaching (elementary) is how value and consensus intertwine. also, at what point does value become a construct in our psychology, versus an embodied instinct or want?

all of the topics (debasement, money and state etc.) could be well applied at the elementary level. we could easily roleplay the interaction between private citizen and state, citizen to citizen, and so on.

Weird #Bitcoin is a communication protocol too

its actual DID

Only the transformation of the global financial system, the systems of high technology and social media into a global decentralized system - shared, owned & managed by the people - creates the essential prerequisites for the realization of a peaceful world ✌️

I believe paid relays are going to be echo chambers of people that just want to hear what they’re talking about. I’m not sure if I’d want to pay for something I might not want to see.

i see it going differently... because paid relays will all have to compete with one another ... they will become curated environments focused on different topics.

Internet protocol connects machines and leads to the unprecedented continuous optimization of what computers can do together.

Nostr protocol connects people and can lead to the unprecedented continuous optimization of what humans can do together.

Imagine that!

A network protocol where humans are the base layer. Unlimited possibilities

The winning apps on this protocol will be the ones that optimize how people on them cooperate with other people to achieve a common goal.

As long as the apps depend on people for their "computation," centralized power will be in check, and the good of the community of participants will be aimed for.

Just as is currently happening with Nostr social clients.

this is a very important distinction

Nostr is not social media. Nostr is a censorship resistant communication protocol.

Are we using it wrong?

No, just the first app.

Nostr is not social media, but it can enables global, decentralized, and censorship-resistant social media

so, it´s a new kind of social media. to say, it is not social media implies, that social media has inherently be dominated by third parties (who a censoring, centralizing etc.) I would not go thus far.

"Bitcoin is not money" ? same question - it is of course money, but a new kind, decentralized, censorship-resistant etc.

to my mind ...

1 Bitcoin = 1 Nostr

Yes

Still have to get my head around privacy implications.

All comms are public and freely scrapable for data miners.

Nostr is censorship resistant. But this doesn‘t mean that it is a legal vacuum. It also doesn‘t mean that every attached Media (pictures, videos,…) you send will make it if you make use of someone between for uploading attachments. This is at least my experience after 1 month using nostr. I’m missing a lot of posts with attachments I tried to share. (No illegal stuff for sure, only inconvenient truth.)

Run your own relay

There's a lot of talk about your post.

Hey Odell, what is the best Citadel dispatch episode to help get a better understanding of UTXL management? Also, if I send you a boostagram on that old episode will you still read it on the newest released episode or is it only for the episode just before?

You’re the man, thank you!

I too, am a Berkey maximalist...

Hey, so I just re-listened to that episode. I understand uxto management from a privacy perspective. But I was more so curious about uxto management from a cost of on chain transaction fee’s.

from a cost perspective you want fewer larger size utxos

onchain transaction fees are calculated based on size in bytes not the amount of sats sent, so the more utxos required on the input side the higher the fee paid

therefore you want to reduce the number of utxos you have while being mindful that any utxos you consolidate will be naturally linked to each other

Do you think this problem could be solved by fedimints in the future?

yes, with the tradeoff of rug pull risk

I get confused about what to do after coinjoining. I want to consolidate several whirlpool outputs but then if I ever spend from the large consolidated utxo, I understand I’ll have to start mixing the change again to get any privacy again…

So almost sounds like I should keep each of the coinjoin outputs as separate utxos so they all remain ‘clean’

the smallest size whirlpool utxo is 100k sats, probably large enough to not be an issue, it’s a balancing act, some consolidation post whirlpool, especially if you do multiple whirlpool rounds could be worth it for long term savings

There is a fine line when it comes to UTXO consolidation. Can't consolidate too much, otherwise future onchain spends can dox how much you hold.

always groom mining wallets

Advanced wallets like Ledger Live let users select UTXOs by hand. So you can decide to make transaction to yourself in low fee periods to make a big UTXO out of small ones. But keep privacy in mind.

I struggle with indecision as far as consolidating UTXOs goes. It really depends on personal preference as far as what UTXO size is too small. If you use lightning and more than anything privacy.

Recently I've really only consolidated UTXOs that already use the same address.

Oh my god, I absolutely love this CD series. It really really helped get my BTC education off the ground and would listen to it on long drives.

True story ...

Are you aware of any news media already in Nostr?

#[1]

💯👨‍💻

funny that I "thought" I'd "make" one but instead got to know that it already exists. lolz.

Nostr provides a neutral environment for human superorganisms to emerge and develop.

That can be torsioned elegantly into something that works just like Twitter. Or many other things. Exciting stuff.

#[0]

Well, that's a mouthful way to say, social media.

Keep it simple my Matt.

💯. Unlike Facebook, men can use nostr without their friends wondering if they’re gay.

More confused now then before. Thanks!
