This app 'Gov UK ID check' has been randomly showing up on people's phones without them installing it

Apparently, it is an authenticator app that the UK government has now re branded as a digital ID app and has secretly added it to millions of devices❗️

🗣️ Testimony : If you can see the “GOV-UK ID check” app, you might want to remove the app. It appeared overnight on my phone automatically

Just curious, does this occur even if you don't have Google on your phone? I uninstalled all Google services and blocked them with a firewall on mine.

Degoogled should be ok? This is theoretically happens through Play Store & it's services. I'm not a security expert though.

I do have a secondary phone that runs GrapheneOS for anything I want to be more secure FWIW

I’ll keep searching and will be critical until I find something more substantial.

Or maybe you could add sources? Appreciate you’re only here to ‘Flash’ things but this requires some investigation, something which I’ve been unable to find in the last 15 mins or so. It may well exist, I’m certainly not ruling it out but when your original post contains a section labelled ‘testimony’ with no source I’m going to be sceptical.

I mean Apple do have form for this, I remember losing my shit because they put a U2 album in my iTunes without consent. I’m still unsure which of these is worse lol.

For every bad government action there is at least the same amount of random bullshit someone else is pushing for reasons.

The UK gov app has been around for a couple of years now, (which I only just learned). The incentive to randomly put it on phones just after refusing a large petition seems off. The comments in the App Store read like the sort of comments people make after being rage baited on X.

Not ruling anything out AND remaining sceptical of click bait bollocks.

This exists, as it’s becoming mandatory for company directors to verify their ID via biometrics by the end of November 2025, but it hasn’t installed without my consent on my phone at least. I didn’t install it, but did it at the post office, which still required my biometrics.
