can someone explain to me how bitchat is supposed to work when my airpods cut out when I walk 5 feet away from my computer

More data needed for audio vs text?

yeah thats my guess as well, but haven’t used any long range bluetooth apps so i dunno

I use my phone as a BT keyboard and mouse to control my PC in another room. It's about 20 feet away through a wall, and works without fail. If I try audio in the same spot it fails without connecting. Maybe Bluetooth has different modes trading off bandwidth for range?

Sounds like a reasonable guess. We probably stretch Bluetooth pretty far these days.

Looking forward to the wi-fi bitchat update

So glad a had a flipper zero...

So, Most consumer Bluetooth devices use Bluetooth Class 2, which has an intended range of about 33 feet. Class 1 Bluetooth can extend to 328 feet, in ideal conditions. Like an open field.

Here's where things get spicy though...

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE or Bluetooth 5) introduced "Coded PHY" modes that can significantly extend range, up to 1312ft in open spaces like open fields.

Hope this helps. ✌️

Same way Apple AirTags and such devices work, I guess?

It’s a bit meshy.

hmm... I can get 200ft away from my macbook pro with perfect clarity using my non-airpods

Good question

wait - does it even work when you're connected to a device already? Bluetooth is a single bandwidth protocol

I think it's a nice PoC but i do not expect to ever be able to chat with any of my neighbors, but it would be great if we could abstract the mesh network and turn it into an open source lib that people could integrate into their apps with so much ease that it would be wasteful to not use it. That way you can maybe build pretty decent mesh networks that specifically in dense areas could stretch to loads of people.

I understand the appeal is very small because internet so far has proven to be too resilient to justify any of this. I have often thought about mesh networking with my friends over wifi when i was younger but getting tlos was mostly an jssue and well, we could already communicate over the regular lines that were in place which are in most cases actually faster as well.

I think in most cases where this would be useful it will always be too late because you would need an internet connection to obtain an app that would integrate you on a mesh network and no normie will ever install it until that moment arrives.

BitChat uses Bluetooth LE, while the airpods use Bluetooth Classic

@jack plans to have a Block terminal within metres of everyone. That boy thinks big. #bullish for my underwater block stock.....oh wait...terminals don't support BT 😟 (maybe its unused in the HW?)

The roadmap mentions things like LoRa. That could extend the range to 15km+. So many cheap hardware devices for meshtastic would suit. Just needs a custom bitchat firmware.

You got scammed by apple with overpriced stuff.

Someone please answer! The meme is a similar situation to which I was in yesterday at the angels game with my friend. We were within two-three urinals stall distance away, but we didn’t have bitchat yet lol!

It's ok solution for an office or airplane, should do 30-50m line of sight. But it's not viable for anything outside of that. Most P2P solutions end up having to do custom hardware because this. WiFi is better.

The idea is not to communicate face to face any more.

two words: bitchat branded computer harness
