Fall PSA: You probably don't have to burn your leaves and you definitely don't need to put them in plastic bags.

It's better for the soil to leave them on the ground. If you're worried they'll kill your grass you can mulch them up with a mower.

Throwing away leaves removes valuable biomass from your yard.

Just have to buy fertilizer if you get rid of your leaves.

I like to pick up leaves from places with weeds because they are less likely to have herbicides. I use these for chicken bedding, this will get composted afterwards.

It depends on the amount of leaves. I mulch up some and when it becomes too much I burn them or blow them into a pile by the road and the town comes by and sucks them up.

Yes, and I am always unnecessarily annoyed when they become too much to mulch.

In the summer you cut the grass, in the fall you cut the leaves.

True

So you're telling me all that mess my neighbours trees dump on my estate is actually valuable fertilizer?

It's time to run the lawnmover over my driveway then.

Almost as if nature is a series of elegant interconnected systems and interventions destroy equilibriums…

We can extend the argument to toilets. Make composting toilets normal.

OK, but most of the mass is carbon (50%) of leaves was from the air (CO2). Soil nutrients (nitrogen), is only 2-3% of leaves.

Don't mow them. Lots of bugs like firefly's are in there for the winter and they get killed when you now the leaves.

Worried the leaves will kill your lawn? Good. Lawns are an awful stupid invention. What a waste of space that also makes more work for you. I hope to one day get my property down to just mowing the septic drain field.

We don't have many deciduous trees here so it's not really a problem. I agree that they're too good a resource to let leave the property.

Branches & sticks that drop get turned into biochar by burning under restricted oxygen.

If I had excess leaves I'd probably put them in a wire cage to concentrate them & let them break down of their own accord. Whenever I clean the gutters, I'm amazed at the quality of soil leaves produce. It would make an excellent mulch.

Great point

mulching cover on the mower is 👌

i like \/\/ormz>

alternatively, compost

Wow, the burning around here where I live is so bad, people really are that stupid. 😵

Dont understand why people feel the need to dispose of leaves. It’s nature being all naturery and shit. Plus hedgehogs like it.

I saw one of my neighbors sweeping the leaves up in her yard with a broom and dust pan 🤣

People like this probably wouldn't survive a one week blackout 😂

Wow…

They are called leaves because you are supposed to leave them alone.

Fantastic

I heard that in the US people put them in plastic bags & leave them out for people just take them.

Like they literally give them away all bagged up.

Are you not supposed to take those?

Yep, they bag em up... Very silly. I hope someone grabs them and puts them to use. Sometimes they do make it to a place where they become compost but many times it's just straight to the dump.

Now I'm imagining you driving down the road picking up other people's leaves. I love this image

Unfortunately nobody bags them where I live. Occasionally I find an arborist has dumped his wood chips. Occasional a fallen tree. Leaf compost is pretty amazing stuff.

Leaf blowers are also the most ridiculous invention ever. Burn leaves from millions of years ago to move around leaves today.

Lmaoooo

I’m not throwing them out.. I pay someone to do that.
