We're going to be moving forward under the expectation that future Pixel devices may not meet the requirements to run GrapheneOS (https://grapheneos.org/faq#future-devices) and may not support using another OS. We've been in talks with a couple OEMs about making devices and what it would cost.

wouldn’t it be possible to launch a new privacy mobile phone brand if some of the “smart” people stick their heads together? compete against the market leaders, surely the privacy phone would attract high interest

Smart people with an interest in this rather niche device category are probably not wealthy enough to fund this. Except for @jack.

One hard problem that is we’ve already seen the anon the phone and that one was a complete honey pot so people are now suspicious

That ANOM device and service was sketchy from the start. It had no external groups performing security assurance towards it, had no public face or a person/group associating with it and it's certain they marketed their product on unfounded claims.

There was zero transparency, and they wouldn't have any because they know if they had an associated person - they'd risk being a target later or have a destroyed reputation.

Being a public group of individuals, there's a reputation on the line for us.

What the estimate $ ?

A new device effort will cost millions to get something slightly below the same level of what we have now.

Millions is the broad term. If it’s a ten million dollars then I guess it’s possible to fund rise if hundreds then gonna be tough

It shouldn't be that high hopefully. It would likely be an OEM making a variant of their existing device but designed for GrapheneOS.

Very interesting…

This is absolutely possible without any VC involvement — the community will step up. For example: personally, I’m ready to donate and go all-in on pre-orders for my whole family. I’m more than happy to wait as long as it takes for the devices to be developed 💪

Sad day

Woah. Was not expecting this.

You're doing the work of the lord.

Shameful. The only reason I have a pixel is graphene. If they make a phone, even if it's a entry one, I might buy it.

!!!

Is your current perception that a competive device could be produced by a small project (relative to Google) like yourself?

Ever considered Fairphone as OEM?

They aren't a group we could work with. Fairphone have made numerous security oversights that make their devices an unacceptable choice for GrapheneOS to run on. They also currently do partnerships with organisations by people openly hostile towards GrapheneOS to the point of attacking team members, their userbase and the founder on social media.

https://grapheneos.org/ is an awesome project.

So easy to install and gives you full Android functionality in a private and secure way.

It might be a silver lining if we end up not having to use Google phones. And a dark world if Graphene is not supported on any hardware.

It's disgusting how we're marching forward into technocracy, and it's the phone that started it all.

cant wait for new devices. didnt like the google connection, but at least now you all are looking for alternatives.

Already Expected 😒 this will happen to all smartphones in future unless vulgar reverse engineering
