There is some great independent journalism to be found on platforms like Substack already.
The Racket and Public News come to mind.
Vanity points I guess? The in-group status, the feeling of being a gatekeeper, all these things do weird shit to people. The prisoner experiment comes to mind.
Also, people get stuck in habits. When things gradually get worse they don’t notice and now they’re stuck in a career that isn’t what they hoped it would be, but it pays the mortgage and keeps the family afloat so quitting is scary.

You could delete all the social apps from your phone.
You can still check the feeds on your computer, but the extra friction cuts your usage down tremendously.

This woman was invited on Good Morning Britain to give the pro ‘Just Stop Oil’ position opposing Konstantin Kisin and nearly has a breakdown because she feels like no-one is taking it seriously enough and immediately attacks Konstantin when he briefly chimes in.
At one point she’s asked to give her opinion on solutions and goes into a laundry list of Marxist bullshit and then says “I do know what we need!” 😂
