Using CloudFlare and other corporate MitM "services" to protect your server against DDOS attacks? Looking for an ethical replacement? nostr:npub1hykucplphuhelaxutcw4jw3vuu7gcg42czhqmk7jhchs8vdga4fsj73p33 is using Deflect for pluralistic.net:

> Momentum building for school phone bans

I'm in two minds about this.

In my utopia, schools would ban portable surveillance devices, both for people studying *and* working there. They would also supply both with devices for schooltime use, whose hardware, software, and networking fully respect privacy and other universal human rights and freedoms.

But what's more likely, in the short term, is banning the latter, and forcing people to use the former.

Eek! That's definitely not a good way to do it. I'm sure your intentions are good, but this is not best practice.

Firstly, did you get all these people's permission to publish their account address and their geographical connections? If not, this is low-level doxxing.

Secondly, once you've got consent, you'd be much more useful to get your list added to community directories like fedi.directory and Trunk:

https://communitywiki.org/trunk

This makes the list more discoverable and maintainable.

So should Microsoft be informing everyone of every patch they come up with, implement in a controlled environment and found problems with/broke programs all the time? Or are we just thinking they're not even doing anything at all/making it low priority during the time it takes to fix the problem?

Yes. Relying on security by obscurity is baked into BorgSoft's DNA. Which is why they still won't publish Windows source code under Free Code licenses. Even the ancient, unsupported versions.

This applies to reputation security too. They think that being opaque about their vulnerabilities makes them seem more trustworthy. It doesn't.

Agent Orange wins either way. If he gets clobbered for this, he can play the martyr to his cult. If he doesn't, he can play it up as evidence that he's more powerful than The System (TM). Given two options, I take the third. Relentless, gentle mockery. Enough to pop his bubble, but gentle enough not to martyrdom fuel.

> fans of women's football have been in town lately and it's a VERY different crowd to when the men's teams are playing

OMG yes! I live near the stadium in The Tron. When men's sports games are on, munters park on the footpath and walk past all night making a hell of a racket. If it wasn't for the closed roads and the Springbok protests info boards on the front of the stadium being temporarily covered up, I would barely have noticed the FIFA games were on.

> all the [Invidious] servers are Northern Hemisphere and wonder if that matters

I don't think so. AFAIK when you visit the server homepage, it downloads the Invidious JavaScript, and runs it in your web browser. Those scripts then access the YT servers the same way their own web apps do.

If you've got a bit of time to kill, you could set up your own Invidious server. Deploying replacement web apps like this (and Nitter for Titter, scribe.rip for Medium, etc) are a low-risk first step in learning to host your own online services.

I just happened to be reading about #hubzilla and #zot. #hubzilla has "nomadic Digital IDs" from the zot protocol. Zot seems like the best approach for #activitypub .

#bluesky implements #DID.

I've been planning to deGoggle for a *long* time. I got another nudge when they started putting storage limits on accounts, which was the main reason I'd put it off. But there's always been something more urgent to do. Now it's looking very urgent. No ways I'm giving those corporate Stalinists (more of) my personal information.

Then they wanted to break encryption to monitor people they accused of being Nazis. But I was certainly against Nazis, so I said nothing.

Then they wanted to break encryption to expose the degenerates, queers, trannies, and uppity coloureds. By this point I was getting scared, but I wasn't kinky, gay, trans or a PoC, so I said nothing.

So when they broke encryption to catch people who criticise the govt, there was no one left to speak for me.

First they wanted to break encryption because it can be used by terrorists and pedophiles. But I was not a terrorist or a pedophiles, so I said nothing.

Then they they wanted to break encryption to stop it being used by ransomware attackers, catfish, and other scammers. But I was not a scammer, so I said nothing.

Then they wanted to break encryption to catch drug dealing gangsters. But I was not a gangster, so I said nothing.

"83% of UK citizens believe personal conversations on messaging apps such as Element, WhatsApp or Signal should have the highest level of security and privacy possible.

It’s also notable that private conversations are more important to women than men, and that the appetite for privacy increases with age."
