nostr:npub12ydruq0cv4qgk6qwe55yjultfw3jvqyxa0ve2sz4vnheekrwtxksk0dsqf Someone asked this yesterday, I posted a list of fediverse news accounts & bots to follow: https://mstdn.ca/@deltatux/110840855982575965
Most Canadian news orgs unlike American news orgs still maintain RSS feeds, great way to keep tabs on all the news in a single spot.
Hope this helps!
The changes mean that people in Canada are not able to view or share news on Facebook and Instagram — including news articles, videos and audio posted by outlets inside or outside of Canada. Links posted by Canadian outlets are still visible in other countries.
That's OK, it just means that I will continue to do so on the #fediverse instead... Publications should really consider coming here & stop being held hostage by Big Tech.

nostr:npub1h2nsqts7l467nrvvdr343530pgm8ug6np5udfwlnwcet5alm5aqqyznx0j Also consider that you have to pay US$50-75K/year to send your kids to a top university in the States, vs maybe US$3-6K/year for UofT or McGill here in Canada (up to US$15K/year for a professional program at UofT).
And you might have to have paid >$10K/year for private school to get them into those US universities, if your school district wasn't well funded.
And after they graduate, they'll lose their health insurance coverage.
Lots of hidden costs to chip away at an IT pay diff. 🙁
nostr:npub17yujtq4726d4g8mxwp9hayuz9jahfgsc0j03ncs6e22l8h03gf5s9ppxek that is true and if you are in a medical emergency, you better hope that the facility and/or doctor who tends to you is in network. There are so many medical debt horror stories in the States.
The US is truly a "pay to win" system...
nostr:npub1h2nsqts7l467nrvvdr343530pgm8ug6np5udfwlnwcet5alm5aqqyznx0j And I think you might be giving journalists too much credit for statistical literacy; some of them are talking about specific fields, but many/most of them just look at the mean.
nostr:npub17yujtq4726d4g8mxwp9hayuz9jahfgsc0j03ncs6e22l8h03gf5s9ppxek Not sure I was trying to refer to journalists but really based on the general discourse I hear from people over the years.
I find that generally when people say the US pays better, I highly doubt they're talking about grocers, fast food worker, service industry workers and etc. People generally would talk about "aspirational" careers like STEM, finance, medical and etc.
nostr:npub17yujtq4726d4g8mxwp9hayuz9jahfgsc0j03ncs6e22l8h03gf5s9ppxek I think it really depends on the field. Some fields pay way more in the US than they do here in Canada.
For fields like IT especially software development, Canada is the outsource country as our salaries are generally less than in the States. The fact that CAD trades lower than USD entices American tech companies to outsource to Canada or hire Canadian contractors.
When people say the US pays more, they're likely focusing on the fields where the pay gap is huge.
By all means. But who are the people who were treated unfairly? It's all in the eyes of the beholder. #Twitter

nostr:npub1h2nsqts7l467nrvvdr343530pgm8ug6np5udfwlnwcet5alm5aqqyznx0j I used to have home phone service but honestly I never use it. I just want a cheap phone so my kids can learn to use the phone and be able to dial 911 in an emergency
nostr:npub1en8nxprfk64w40rwfeeusp8wwlje5k6j8utf0rq8zvg3070regxqwskecl
In that case, 1 option is Fongo Home Phone service, it's $4.95/month + tax. I've only used Fongo's free call app before, it's decent.
https://www.fongo.com/services/fongo-home-phone/
Another option is Ooma, they offer free* phone service: https://www.ooma.ca/home-phone-service/
*Free apparently comes w/ 911 fees, "regulatory fees" + tax
Please keep in mind, unlike traditional phone lines, VOIP services don't come w/ E911. Callers must tell operators the address. Ooma does but only to the registered address.
nostr:npub1en8nxprfk64w40rwfeeusp8wwlje5k6j8utf0rq8zvg3070regxqwskecl Several years ago, when my parents still had to have a "home phone", they were on Yak. It worked for the most part but as with all VOIP services, can sometimes be unstable.
Heard good things about TekSavvy's VOIP service but never tried it before.
Fido offers a Home Phone service which is pretty much the phone adapter connects to the LTE network to provide home phone service. It's pricier (@ $20/month) than VOIP but should be more stable.
Hope this helps!
TIL United States is the only country to refrigerate eggs

https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/15jbup0/til_united_states_is_the_only_country_to/

nostr:npub1f5h6emnhzs97u6u8vzk04l4xymxpljpqaurnrhshykrnn4my829q79wjhr I know this is a bot but the US is definitely not the only country that puts eggs in the fridge. Most Canadians do as well & is common practice in parts of Asia.
Heck, for example, in Singapore, this is the recommended practice: https://www.sfa.gov.sg/food-for-thought/article/detail/eggs-to-refrigerate-or-not
Same advice is given in Hong Kong, except that eggs might not be sold refrigerated: https://www.cfs.gov.hk/english/multimedia/multimedia_pub/multimedia_pub_fsf_189_03.html
Agreed, it would have been awesome to see #Concorde #flights tracked on these sites.

nostr:npub1h2nsqts7l467nrvvdr343530pgm8ug6np5udfwlnwcet5alm5aqqyznx0j That seems like an issue that’s going to need solving before going online for everything. I don’t see how you can do online passport services when you don’t have a reliable ID system.
I’m a fan of the idea of a government digital ID. Some commercial services/apps implement it for a “blue check”-like system. The local classifieds app does to indicate which users are at least real humans for example.
nostr:npub1xtarqpp8szh3emv6fuy3qxtkl0eer9a0snf9kttxkkavt7nlrx7sd9wd29 Well, I don't know what their solution is for the upcoming renewing passports online feature coming later this year, guess we'll just have to find out lol...
nostr:npub1h2nsqts7l467nrvvdr343530pgm8ug6np5udfwlnwcet5alm5aqqyznx0j Do you have a digital ID system in Canada? I’m wondering how many countries have systems like we have in Denmark and Sweden. The government and banks partnered to create an identity provider that we use to sign into everything.
nostr:npub1xtarqpp8szh3emv6fuy3qxtkl0eer9a0snf9kttxkkavt7nlrx7sd9wd29 Aside from passports, there's no national ID system in Canada. The ID that people carry are usually issued by each province & they're usually driver's licenses (or provincial photo ID cards for those without a driver's license).
Some provinces like British Columbia allow people to login to gov't services with their BC ID credentials.
There is limited support using bank creds as a "sign-in partner" to login to some federal gov't services.
Overall, it's pretty disjointed atm...
