Big Barry Bitcoin - Bitcoiner, pleb, developer, enthusiast, 👎💩coins Check out my nostr blog! https://big-barry-bitcoin.npub.pro/

Genuine, non-hater discussion topic incoming.

Bitcoiners like to say that Bitcoin is fully uncensorable, that governments can't fully take it down. The problem I see is that even though the *technology* can't be taken down, the means by which people can enter into using said technology can easily be cut off, and not just via KYC. While there's still the peer-to-peer aspect, that also could easily be targeted through surveillance, and unless people start to become fully anonymous (not realistic for most), that's not something you can stop.

On top of that fact, there's a lot of KYCed Bitcoin out there, and the problem with that is that if it's KYCed, it makes it pretty trivial for governments to surveil wallet addresses and transactions.

In this way, wouldn't it be wiser to use a privacy coin if you're okay with KYC? Also, if the legal system ever decides to make it virtually impossible to obtain Bitcoin and you're going to go the route of "privately" obtaining it, then you're not going to get very far if they can surveil all of that information.

To reiterate, I'm not a hater, not by a long shot. Aside from my personal issues with KYC keeping me from buying, I believe in the technology, and I think it's got some serious potential to be the basis for economic change. I'm also not specifically a Monero guy, even though I think that it has some MAJOR benefits. But the problem with Bitcoin's lack of privacy, as well as the fact that KYC is virtually unavoidable, make it hard for me to believe in the maxi opinion that Bitcoin is completely unstoppable. Again, I do agree that the technology itself can't be shut down, but if you can't legally obtain it and you can't truly obtain it privately, then I don't see how it's unstoppable.

Just some thoughts I had. I'm genuinely curious what some of you guys think about this subject.

This is why a lot of people into bitcoin are accellerationists. People don't change en mass unless shit hits the fan hard first. We need to get worse than China to see a real breakout.

That said, we can just focus on ourselves and our loved ones and build our own communities to ensure that we can always survive.

Like bitcoin markets popping up in different locations, meetups where we can all trade with one another with relative safety.

Learning where we can go abroad to withdraw fiat converted from bitcoin in the cheapest way possible.

Understanding coin joins.

Taking risks with throwaway accounts and learning what you can and cannot get away with when dealing with banks.

Apart from being visually annoying, does it also affect load performance? Is that something you're looking into?

I've been happily pressing the edit button to cycle back to the original post, but I feel like instead of cycling, if it loaded a selector and if it only loaded notes you ask for, that might help bandwidth?

#Bitcoin is the toroise vs the hare. All the traders and all the active money managers trying to accellerate their wealth growth, dumping bitcoin in favour of $MSTR, and bitcoin is going at its own pace.

The thing that matters is what you can pass on to the next generation. Give them a job that keeps them running on a treadmill or bitcoin that offers them freedom money that allows them to explore themselves and choose life over obsessing over money and chasing wealth like we had to.

Even in the mid term, you are giving yourself that same gift. Yes the government will take a massive cut from you and them whenever they can, but think of it like an extra VAT tax, mentally acknowledge it beforehand and relax and live your life.

I firmly believe that chasing the next big thing is like wiggling jn quicksand. You may feel like you're making progress, but you're sinking. Just grab the bitcoin rope and let it pull you out.

I don't need small gifts. Just give me zaps. 😁

My answer is always this:

Blockchain is a structure, called a data structure in programming, no different to a list, array, linked list, all types of data structures you learn about in university but one that was rarely talked about because it had no real use case.

Bitcoin is a set of rules and incentives that uses the Blockchain data structure to provide order, but also uses proof of work and distribution to provide immutability to the Blockchain and also defines monetary policy and needs to constantly be updated to ensure it can work effectively over time just like any software.

The Blockchain is data, it gets appended to, but it doesn't change whollistically like software or a network can, so it is the immutable product of bitcoin.

How did you justify this? Would love to hear about the considerations. I get you need to have a connection to your node, but then does this also apply to "on the phone" instances where we have no other channels... so you can't rebalance through us.

❤️

Literally went there today, considered donating and thought, "they should accept sats by now". Specified an amount and looked at the options.

The "simplest" option is PayPal, but with my cookie forgetting browser and 2fa, not as simple as bitcoin.

I ended up NOT donating today. 🤷‍♂️

I knew I'd heard of assmilking... it's taking sats from a server taking advantage of people who create reusable qr codes without realising the danger of it.

LNBits had a feature to help prevent it. That's how I know about it.

I use njump.me to share posts. That website will usually give you that rich preview, but sometimes not. I think it has to do with how new it is or if there needs to be some caching done.

When you click "share" or #Amethyst, it usually gives an njump.me url by default.

So you can pay bills, set up direct debits, get credit and get cash from an ATM through shadow banking?

The internet still comes through the phone and still sounds like screaming robots.

Well, I do understand the me too type movement. You feel more confident to mention your problem when you learn that you are not alone. Plus you might also be glad to ride on the coat tails of the people that found an audience you thought didn't exist: a sympathetic crowd. More would probably speak up if they found an actioning audience that might make a difference.

Wait wait. You're telling me that you can present facual evidence around the abuse of ppwer, corruption and at the very least, incorrect rulings and their consequences but this is not enough to raise eyebrows? It must be turned into a popularity contest?
